Box C/D small nucleolar ribonucleoparticles (snoRNPs) support 2'-O-methylation of several target RNAs. They share a common set of four core proteins (SNU13, NOP58, NOP56, and FBL) that are assembled on different guide small nucleolar RNAs. Assembly of thes ...

This thesis investigates the magnetic properties of single atoms and dimers adsorbed on graphene and oxide decoupling layers supported by single crystal metal substrates, using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spin-polarized scanning tunneling micro ...

The presence of expanded poly-glutamine (polyQ) repeats in proteins is directly linked to the pathogenesis of several neurodegenerative diseases, including Huntington's disease. However, the molecular and structural basis underlying the increased toxicity ...

The magnetic force microscope (MFM) is an established experimental tool for imaging stray fields with high spatial resolution and sensitivity. The MFM contrast can however contain contributions from the sample topography, variations in the surface Kelvin p ...

Solving the 3D structure of a biomolecule requires recognition of its conformers and measurements of their individual structural identities, which can be compared with calculations. We employ the phenomenon of nonstatistical photofragmentation, detected by ...

We performed magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) on healthy individuals with tinnitus and no hearing loss (n = 16) vs. a matched control group (n = 17) to further elucidate the role of excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters in tinnitus. Two-dimensio ...

Adherent cells migrate and change their shape by means of protrusion and retraction at their edges. When and where these activities occur defines the shape of the cell and the way it moves. Despite a great deal of knowledge about the structural organizatio ...

The increasing challenges caused by the growing and aging population and the fast pace of life are calling for a change of our current medical care system towards being rapid, easy, and on-demand self-care. Empowerment with the self-caring components such ...

Structural relations established among agents influence the performance of decentralized service discovery process in multiagent systems. Moreover, distributed systems should be able to adapt their structural relations to changes in environmental condition ...

We present the design and performance of an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) low temperature scanning probe microscope employing the nitrogen-vacancy color center in diamond as an ultrasensitive magnetic field sensor. Using this center as an atomic-size scanning pr ...

Immense field enhancement and nanoscale confinement of light are possible within nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPoM) plasmonic resonators, which enable novel optically activated physical and chemical phenomena and render these nanocavities greatly sensitive to m ...

Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is an atomic-level method to determine the chemical structure, 3D structure and dynamics of solids and semi-solids. This Primer summarizes the basic principles of NMR spectroscopy as applied to the ...

Magnetic resonance techniques at nuclei and electrons are applied to characterize the electronic structure and collective magnetic excitations throughout the magnetic phase diagrams of the lacunar spinels GaV4S8 and GaV4Se8 showing cycloidal, Néel-type sky ...

Combinatorial libraries of structurally diverse peptide macrocycles offer a rich source for the development of high-affinity ligands to targets of interest. In this work we have developed linkers for the generation of genetically encoded bicyclic peptides ...

MR is a well-established technique routinely used in preclinical and clinical studies. This thesis focussed on the improvement of sensitivity of different methods in MR. Hyperpolarized 129Xe gas is used for studying pulmonary disease or cerebral perfusion ...

There is uncertainty in understanding of the relationship between physico-chemical parameters of nanosized titanium dioxide (nano-TiO2) and its toxicity when brought into contact with living cells. This study provides a multidisciplinary experimental insig ...

ABCG2 is an ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter whose function affects the pharmacokinetics of drugs and contributes to multidrug resistance of cancer cells. While its interaction with the endogenous substrate estrone-3-sulfate (E1S) has been elucidated ...

Atomic scale engineering of magnetic fields is a key ingredient for miniaturizing quantum devices and precision control of quantum systems. This requires a unique combination of magnetic stability and spin-manipulation capabilities. Surface-supported singl ...

We report on an atomic-scale study of the Kondo lattice compound YbAl3 using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). An analysis of the surface orientation and structure is performed based on STM images containing more than one crystal ...

Metal-organic frameworks(MOFs) are promising materials for photocatalytic applications. MOFs modular and porosity structure provides a platform to assemble photo-active and catalytic-sites building block units that can offer unique photo-physics. This feat ...
