Detecting light, photon by photon, has been possible since the 1930s, with the invention of the photomultiplier tube (PMT). However, it is only since the 1970s, that solid-state single-photon detectors have emerged and only since 2003 that a new technology ...

Magnetic fields occupying the voids of the large scale structure may be a relic from the Early Universe originating from either Inflation or from cosmological phase transitions. We explore the possibility of identifying the inflationary origin of the void ...

Aims. Intergalactic magnetic fields in the voids of the large-scale structure can be probed via measurements of secondary gamma-ray emission from gamma-ray interactions with extragalactic background light. Lower bounds on the magnetic field in the voids we ...

The response function of CdTe detectors used in a hard X-ray spectrometer system (HXRS) on the TCV tokamak fusion experiment is modeled based on the measured energy spectra from multiple gamma-ray sources. The response function consists of an asymmetric Ga ...

Finite volume methods are proposed for computing approximate pathwise entropy/kinetic solutions to conservation laws with flux functions driven by low-regularity paths. For a convex flux, it is demonstrated that driving path oscillations may lead to "cance ...

The NANOGrav, Parkes, European, and International Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) Collaborations have reported evidence for a common-spectrum process that can potentially correspond to a stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) in the 1-100 nHz frequency ...

This work proposes a method to measure the photon polarisation in

decays and prepares the necessary elements for this measurement using the data sets collected by the LHCb experiment at CERN in

The present manuscript documents the development of a practical calculation scheme to model the response of a diamond detector in the mixed (neutron and gamma) radiation field of the CROCUS experimental reactor at EPFL. The model is shown to perform reason ...

Dedicated experiments were conducted in mixed H-D plasmas in JET to demonstrate the efficiency of the 3-ion ICRF scenario for plasma heating, relying on injected fast NBI ions as the resonant ion component. Strong core localization of the RF power depositi ...

Gamma rays in nuclear reactors, arising either from fission or decay processes, significantly contribute to the heating and dose of the reactor components. Zero power research reactors offer the possibility to measure gamma rays in a purely neutronic envir ...

Gamma rays are an inextricable part of a nuclear reactor's radiation field, and as such require characterization for dose rate estimations required for the radiation protection of personnel, material choices, and the design of nuclear facilities. Most comm ...

We study the effects of galaxy formation physics on the magnetization of the intergalactic medium (IGM) using the IllustrisTNG simulations. We demonstrate that large-scale regions affected by the outflows from galaxies and clusters contain magnetic fields ...

Detection and direct power conversion of high energy and high intensity ionizing radiation could be a key element in next generation nuclear reactor safety systems and space-born devices. For example, the Fukushima catastrophe in 2011 could have been large ...

Efficient third-order nonlinear optical processes have been successfully integrated on silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguides. In particular, owing to Si3N4 wide transparency window spanning from the visible to the middle-infrared (mid-IR), efficient mid-IR di ...

A fiducial cross section for W gamma production in proton-proton collisions is measured at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 137 fb(-1) of data collected using the CMS detector at the LHC. The W -> e nu and mu nu decay modes are used in a maximum-likeli ...
