Objective. Syntax involves complex neurobiological mechanisms, which are difficult to disentangle for multiple reasons. Using a protocol able to separate syntactic information from sound information we investigated the neural causal connections evoked by t ...

This thesis presents advancements in the understanding of the plasma conditions leading to the excitation and saturation of the Edge Harmonic Oscillations (EHOs) observed during QH-mode operation in tokamak plasmas. Such operations represent a safer altern ...

Discrete domes are doubly curved structures comprising a network of beam-like elements. We study the mechanics of discrete domes made of ribbons woven in a pentagonal triaxial pattern. Experiments and finite element simulations are performed to characteriz ...

In this paper, we propose a three-level linearized implicit difference scheme for the two-dimensional spatial fractional nonlinear complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. We prove that the difference scheme is stable and convergent under mild conditions. The opt ...

Chatbots have long been advocated for computer-assisted language learning systems to support learners with conversational practice. A particular challenge in such systems is explaining mistakes stemming from ambiguous grammatical constructs. Misplaced modi ...

Syntax is a species-specific component of human language combining a finite set of words in a potentially infinite number of sentences. Since words are by definition expressed by sound, factoring out syntactic information is normally impossible. Here, we c ...

Macroscopic instabilities and their unfavourable effects on plasma confinement pose a central challenge for the development of reactor relevant tokamak scenarios. Some promising operation scenarios feature extended regions of low magnetic shear. These are ...

The effect of Landau damping is often calculated based on a Gaussian beam distribution in all degrees of freedom. The stability of the beam is however strongly dependent on the details of the distribution. The present study focuses on the change of bunch d ...

Transitional turbulence in shear flows is supported by a network of unstable exact invariant solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. The network is interconnected by heteroclinic connections along which the turbulent trajectories evolve between invariant ...

We present our studies on a compact high-performance continuous wave (CW) double-resonance (DR) rubidium frequency standard in view of future portable applications. Our clock exhibits a short-term stability of 1.4 x 10(-13) tau(-1/2), consistent with the s ...

Recent experimental studies have shown rich transition behaviour in rotating plane Couette flow (RPCF). In this paper we study the transition in supercritical RPCF theoretically by determination of equilibrium and periodic orbit tertiary states via Floquet ...

In this paper, stability analysis of traffic control for two-region urban cities is treated. It is known in control theory that optimality does not imply stability. If the optimal control is applied in a heavily congested system with high demand, traffic c ...

This paper presents a method for learning discrete robot motions from a set of demonstrations. We model a motion as a nonlinear autonomous (i.e. time-invariant) Dynamical System (DS), and define sufficient conditions to ensure global asymptotic stability a ...

We prove nonlinear stability of the fundamental self-similar solution of the wave equation with a focusing power nonlinearity tt-=p for [image omitted] in the radial case. The proof is based on a semigroup formulation of the wave equation in similarity coo ...

Electrochemistry and biochemistry have always been ideal applications for diamond due to its chemical inertness and stability, sensitivity and biocompatibility. Several diamond ChemFET concepts have been proposed to date, however further improvements are s ...

This chapter reviews the progress accomplished since the redaction of the first ITER Physics Basis (1999 Nucl. Fusion 39 2137-664) in the field of energetic ion physics and its possible impact on burning plasma regimes. New schemes to create energetic ions ...
