Shear layers and corresponding Kelvin Helmholtz-type Coherent Structures (KHCS) can be generated by rivers discharging into laterally-unconfined quiescent open water bodies (e.g., lakes). When the river discharge has a greater density than the receiving wa ...

We consider the elastic scattering problem by multiple disjoint arcs or cracks in two spatial dimensions. A key aspect of our approach lies in the parametric description of each arc's shape, which is controlled by a potentially high-dimensional, possibly c ...

We present a simple PDE construction of the sine‐Gordon measure below the first threshold (), in both the finite and infinite volume settings, by studying the corresponding parabolic sine‐Gordon model. We also establish pathwise global well‐posedness of th ...

We investigate the strict positivity and the compact support property of solutions to the one-dimensional nonlinear stochastic heat equation: (Formula presented), with nonnegative and compactly supported initial data u0, where Ẇ is the space-time white noi ...

We present a fundamental improvement of a high polynomial degree time domain cell method recently introduced by the last three authors. The published work introduced a method featuring block-diagonal system matrices where the block size and conditioning sc ...

Even the best current algorithms for estimating body 3D shape and pose yield results that include body self- intersections. In this paper, we present CLOAF, which exploits the diffeomorphic nature of Ordinary Differential Equations to eliminate such self-i ...

Performance limitations for implanted antennas, taking radiation efficiency as the metric, are presented. The performance limitations use a convex optimization procedure with the current density inside the implant acting as its degree of freedom. The knowl ...

The choice of the shape parameter highly effects the behaviour of radial basis function (RBF) approximations, as it needs to be selected to balance between the ill-conditioning of the interpolation matrix and high accuracy. In this paper, we demonstrate ho ...

We present a loosely coupled scheme for the numerical simulation of the cardiac electrofluid-structure interaction problem, whose solution is typically computationally intensive due to the need to suitably treat the coupling of the different submodels. Our ...

This thesis presents advancements in the understanding of the plasma conditions leading to the excitation and saturation of the Edge Harmonic Oscillations (EHOs) observed during QH-mode operation in tokamak plasmas. Such operations represent a safer altern ...

Metal plasticity is an inherently multiscale phenomenon due to the complex long-range field of atomistic dislocations that are the primary mechanism for plastic deformation in metals. Atomistic/Continuum (A/C) coupling methods are computationally efficient ...

One of the major challenges of coupled problems is to manage nonconforming meshes at the interface between two models and/or domains, due to different numerical schemes or domain discretizations employed. Moreover, very often complex submodels depend on (e ...

We propose a matrix-free solver for the numerical solution of the cardiac electrophysiology model consisting of the monodomain nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation coupled with a system of ordinary differential equations for the ionic species. Our numeric ...

We discuss the multiscale modeling of a granular material trapped between continuum elastic domains. The amorphous granular region, usually termed “gouge,” is under high confinement pressure, to represent the loading of faults at depth. We model the granul ...

Local modifications of a computational domain are often performed in order to simplify the meshing process and to reduce computational costs and memory requirements. However, removing geometrical features of a domain often introduces a non-negligible error ...

This open access book allows the reader to grasp the main bulk of fluid flow problems at a brisk pace. Starting with the basic concepts of conservation laws developed using continuum mechanics, the incompressibility of a fluid is explained and modeled, lea ...

In this thesis, we study systems of active particles interacting via generic torques of different nature. We analyze the phase behavior of these systems, which results from the interplay between self-propulsion, excluded-volume and torques. We tackle the p ...

We hypothesize that large eddies play a major role in the entrainment of aeolian particles. To test this, wind-tunnel experiments are carried out to measure the particle entrainment rate for various sizes and flow conditions. Wind-tunnel flows are usually ...

Predicting particle transport in turbulent flows has a plethora of applications, some of which are: the transport of atmospheric aerosols, the deposition of blood cells in the arteries of human bodies and the atomization of fuel droplets in combustion cham ...

The transition process from laminar stratified shear layer to fully developed turbulence is usually captured using direct numerical simulations, in which the computational cost is extremely high and the numerical domain size is limited. In this work, we in ...
