Accurate gyrotron magnetic axis determination

Résumé

A way to determine the magnetic axis of gyrotron cryomagnets, and more generally magnets composed of coils wound around a single mandrel is presented. The method is based on measurements of the longitudinal component of the magnetic field performed at suitable locations with a high accuracy (100 ppm) Hall probe [1]. The tilt and the shift of the magnetic axis with respect to the mechanical axis can be determined with a typical accuracy of 0.01deg and 0.1 mm respectively.

Champ magnétique terrestre

Le champ magnétique terrestre, aussi appelé bouclier terrestre, est un champ magnétique présent dans un vaste espace autour de la Terre (de manière non uniforme du fait de son interaction avec le vent solaire) ainsi que dans la croûte et le manteau. Il a son origine dans le noyau externe, par un mécanisme de dynamo auto-excitée. Dynamo terrestre Selon les études de John Tarduno de l'université de Rochester (États-Unis), la Terre possédait déjà un champ magnétique il y a 3,45 milliards d'années.

Magnetic domain

A magnetic domain is a region within a magnetic material in which the magnetization is in a uniform direction. This means that the individual magnetic moments of the atoms are aligned with one another and they point in the same direction. When cooled below a temperature called the Curie temperature, the magnetization of a piece of ferromagnetic material spontaneously divides into many small regions called magnetic domains. The magnetization within each domain points in a uniform direction, but the magnetization of different domains may point in different directions.

Aimant

Un aimant permanent, ou simplement aimant dans le langage courant, est un objet fabriqué dans un matériau magnétique dur, c’est-à-dire dont l'aimantation rémanente et le champ coercitif sont grands (voir ci-dessous). Cela lui donne des propriétés particulières liées à l'existence du champ magnétique, comme celle d'exercer une force d'attraction sur tout matériau ferromagnétique. Le mot aimant est, comme le mot diamant, dérivé du grec ancien ἀδάμας, adámas (« fer particulièrement dur ou diamant »), apparenté à l'adjectif ἀδάμαστος, adámastos, (« indomptable »), en raison de la dureté de la pierre d'aimant.
