Cities are facing unprecedented challenges to their environments and residents due to continuous growth, including urban overheating, daylight accessibility, noise, and air pollution. This requires a holistic approach to the research and implementation of ...

With a growing emphasis on indoor air quality (IAQ) in educational environments, CO2 monitoring in classrooms has become commonplace. CO2 data can be used to estimate outdoor air change rate (ACH) based on the mass balance principle, which can be further l ...

Atmospheric pollution threatens human health worldwide, with tropospheric ozone (O 3) and particulate matter (PM) among the most harmful pollutants. Urban trees can reduce the concentration of air pollutants through dry deposition on their canopies and sto ...

Introduction Since its emergence in late 2019, the SARS-CoV-2 virus has led to a global health crisis, affecting millions and reshaping societies and economies worldwide. Investigating the determinants of SARS-CoV-2 diffusion and their spatiotemporal dynam ...

In this study we present the role of the Planetary Boundary Layer Height (PBLH) on the air pollutant concentrations measured at an urban background station at the megacity of Athens, Greece, an area characterized by complex topography. For this purpose, we ...

We present the design and implementation of RECA, a novel human-centric recommender system for co-optimizing energy consumption, comfort and air quality in commercial buildings. Existing works generally optimize these objectives separately, or by only cont ...

In this thesis, the generation of microcombs under complex, non-trivial, and/or higher-order cavity conditions is explored, both in theory & simulation, and in practical experimentation. Pulse-driving of microresonators is investigated for the generation ...

This simulation-based study aimed to contribute to gaining knowledge on how much the deviation between occupant-related input by the national standard and by insitu measurements might impact predictions of heating/cooling needs in offices. Analysis was per ...

The perception, physiology, behavior, and performance of building occupants are influenced by multi-domain exposures: the simultaneous presence of multiple environmental stimuli, i.e., visual, thermal, acoustic, and air quality. Despite being extensive, th ...

A remote microphone (RM) system can be used in combination with wearable binaural communication devices, such as hearing aids (HAs), to improve speech intelligibility. Typically, a speaker is equipped with a body-worn microphone which enables to pick up th ...

Background The DIC Challenge 2.0 follows on from the work accomplished in the first Digital Image Correlation (DIC) Challenge Reu et al. (Experimental Mechanics 58(7):1067, 1). The second challenge was required to better quantify the spatial resolution of ...

Objective The study was undertaken to show the magnitude of interindividual differences in energy expenditure (i.e., heat production) under normal living conditions with the aim of providing physiological evidence to support the advancement of a personaliz ...

For many decades, ventilated cavities in wall assemblies of buildings have been essential for creating moisture-resilient constructions by allowing airflow within the air gap to promote drying. In addition to that, the airflow in the cavity can contribute ...

Healthy building design is an emerging field of architecture and building engineering. Indoor air quality (IAQ) is an inevitable factor that should be considered in healthy building design due to its demonstrated links with human health and well-being. Thi ...

Stochastic Maximum Likelihood (SML) is a popular direction of arrival (DOA) estimation technique in array signal processing. It is a parametric method that jointly estimates signal and instrument noise by maximum likelihood, achieving excellent statistical ...

Auditory perception is an essential part of a robotic system in Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), and creating an artificial auditory perception system that is on par with human has been a long-standing goal for researchers. In fact, this is a challenging res ...
