We study the optimization of large-scale, real-time ridesharing systems and propose a modular design methodology, Component Algorithms for Ridesharing (CAR). We evaluate a diverse set of CARs (14 in total), focusing on the key algorithmic components of rid ...

Millimeter wave (mmWave) radars are becoming a more popular sensing modality in self-driving cars due to their favorable characteristics in adverse weather. Yet, they currently lack sufficient spatial resolution for semantic scene understanding. In this pa ...

In online data-intensive (OLDI) services, each client request typically executes on multiple servers in parallel; as a result, “system hiccups”, although rare within a single server, can interfere with many client requests and cause violations of service-l ...

Natural language processing models learn word representations based on the distributional hypothesis, which asserts that word context (e.g., co-occurrence) correlates with meaning. We propose that n-grams composed of random character sequences, or garble, ...

This paper investigates the effect of frequency-dependent soil parameters on the simulation of electromagnetic transients on overhead lines, based on the application of the FDTD method to solve the telegrapher’s equations. The ground return impedance is ca ...

Decentralized deployment of drone swarms usually relies on inter-agent communication or visual markers that are mounted on the vehicles to simplify their mutual detection. This letter proposes a vision-based detection and tracking algorithm that enables gr ...

Modular robots hold promise of adaptability, robustness, and versatility. Synchronization of modules is critical; if a module is asynchronous, not only will the robot fail to perform tasks properly, but its behavior may be self-destructive through self-col ...

Byzantine Reliable Broadcast (BRB) is a fundamental distributed computing primitive, with applications ranging from notifications to asynchronous payment systems. Motivated by practical consideration, we study Client-Server Byzantine Reliable Broadcast (CS ...

The digital society requires the acquisition of skills related to computer sciences like computational thinking or competences in coding. Also transversal competences like communication, collaboration and creativity are increasingly important. Educational ...

State-of-the-art 2D image compression schemes rely on the power of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Although CNNs offer promising perspectives for 2D image compression, extending such models to omnidirectional images is not straightforward. First, omn ...

Angle and amplitude estimation errors in magnetic direction finding, called site errors, are important sensor-specific errors in lightning location systems (LLS). They are known to be caused by nearby cables and overhead lines due to induced currents. Due ...

As IoT applications gain widespread adoption, it becomes important to design and implement IoT protocols with security. Existing research in protocol security reveals that the majority of disclosed protocol vulnerabilities are caused by incorrectly impleme ...

This paper presents a thorough experimental evaluation of an extended Gaussian Mixture Probability Hypothesis Density filter which is able to provide state estimates for the maintenance of a multirobot formation, even when the communication fails and the t ...
