Moving towards an increased understanding of the dynamic processes in the edge of tokamak plasmas requires continuous innovation in diagnostic capabilities, pushing the envelope in both spatial and temporal dimenstions. Plasma density and rotation, and the ...

In many tokamak and stellarator experiments around the globe that arc investigating energy production via controlled thermonuclear fusion, electron cyclotron heating and current drive (ECH&CD) are used for plasma start-up, heating, non-inductive current dr ...

The experimental fusion reactor ITER will feature two (or three) heating neutral beam injectors (NBI) capable of delivering 33(or 50) MW of power into the plasma. A NBI consists of a plasma source for production of negative ions (extracted negative ion cur ...

Additive manufacturing (AM) of passive microwave components is of high interest for the cost-effective and rapid prototyping or manufacture of devices with complex geometries. Here, we present an experimental study on the properties of recently demonstrate ...

Software defined radios (SDR) in the microwave X- and K-bands offer the promise of low cost, programmable operation with real-time frequency agility. However, the real world in which such radios operate requires them to be able to detect nanowatt signals i ...

Four EC H&CD (Electron Cyclotron Heating and Current Drive) launchers will be installed into the upper ports #12, #13, #15 and #16 in ITER. Beside plasma heating their main purpose is to counteract plasma instabilities by injecting up to 20 MW of microwave ...

Each of the 4 ITER Electron Cyclotron Heating Upper Launcher (ECHUL) features 8 transmission lines used to inject microwave power of up to 1.31 MW (at the source) per line, into the plasma at 170 GHz. The microwaves are guided from the gyrotrons via (empty ...

The ever-growing demand for high-speed data links together with the increasing congestion in the traditional microwave spectrum are pushing for the exploitation of higher microwave and millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequencies, including the so-called Ka band. ...

Coupling of space-separated resonators is interesting for quantum and communication technologies. In this work, we show that antiferromagnetic resonance in separated parallel-plane slabs of hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) couple cooperatively to terahertz electroma ...

Multipactor is a resonant vacuum discharge occurring in microwave components of satellite systems as well as in particle accelerators. Due to its undesirable effects, multipactor analysis constitutes a mandatory step in the design of modern satellite compo ...

In 1970, Furth and Yoshikawa (1970 Phys. Fluids 13 2593-6) introduced the scalings of adiabatic plasma compression. Basically, if the shape of the external plasma boundary and the aspect ratio are preserved during the compression, then the density, kinetic ...

Plasma-molecular interactions generate molecular ions which react with the plasma and contribute to detachment through molecular activated recombination (MAR), reducing the ion target flux, and molecular activated dissociation (MAD), both of which create e ...

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, atomic multiplet simulations, and density functional theory calculations are employed to identify criteria for the optimum combination of supporting alkaline earth oxide and adsorption site maximizing the spin lifetimes o ...

The design of the ITER ECRH system provides 20 MW millimeter wave power for central plasma heating and MHD stabilization. The system consists of an array of 24 gyrotrons with power supplies coupled to a set of transmission lines guiding the beams to the fo ...

The application of radio frequency (RF) vacuum electronics for the betterment of the human condition began soon after the invention of the first vacuum tubes in the 1920s and has not stopped since. Today, microwave vacuum devices are powering important app ...

We present a X-band 1-bit reconfigurable reflectarray (RRA) cell capable of independent reflection phase control of each linear component of a dual-polarized wave. It presents the lowest loss ever reported in an operational RRA cell at microwave frequencie ...

Phase transitions in non-Hermitian systems are at the focus of cutting edge theoretical and experimental research. On the one hand, parity-time- (PT-) and anti-PT-symmetric physics have gained ever-growing interest, due to the existence of non-Hermitian sp ...

Primordial black holes (PBHs) are black holes that might have formed in high density regions in the early universe. The presence of local-type non-Gaussianity can lead to large-scale fluctuations in the PBH formation rate. If PBHs make up a non-negligible ...

In this opening presentation we will first recall the main characteristics of graphene conductivity and electromagnetic wave propagation on graphene-based structures. Based on these observations and different graphene antenna simulations from microwave to ...

Roughness, defined as unevenness of material surfaces, plays an important role in determining how engineering components or natural objects interact with other bodies and their environment. The emergence of fractal roughness on natural and engineered surfa ...
