The goal of this thesis is the development and the analysis of numerical methods for problems where the unknown is a curve on a smooth manifold. In particular, the thesis is structured around the three following problems: homotopy continuation, curve inter ...

This thesis focuses on non-parametric covariance estimation for random surfaces, i.e.~functional data on a two-dimensional domain. Non-parametric covariance estimation lies at the heart of functional data analysis, and considerations of statistical and com ...

The Schur decomposition of a square matrix A is an important intermediate step of state-of-the-art numerical algorithms for addressing eigenvalue problems, matrix functions, and matrix equations. This work is concerned with the following task: Compute a (m ...

Generalized sampling consists in the recovery of a function f, from the samples of the responses of a collection of linear shift-invariant systems to the input f . The reconstructed function is typically a member of a finitely generated integer-shift invar ...

We propose a novel sparse dictionary learning method for planar shapes in the sense of Kendall, namely configurations of landmarks in the plane considered up to similitudes. Our shape dictionary method provides a good trade-off between algorithmic simplici ...

Strong gravitational lensing is a powerful probe of cosmology and the dark matter distribution. Efficient lensing software is already a necessity to fully use its potential and the performance demands will only increase with the upcoming generation of tele ...

Standard interpolation techniques are implicitly based on the assumption that the signal lies on a single homogeneous domain. In contrast, many naturally occurring signals lie on an inhomogeneous domain, such as brain activity associated to different brain ...

Recently, triangle configuration based bivariate simplex splines (referred to as TCB-spline) have been introduced to the geometric computing community. TCB-splines retain many attractive theoretic properties of classical B-splines, such as partition of uni ...

We propose a physiologically based intonation model using perceptual relevance. Motivated by speech synthesis from a speech-to-speech translation (S2ST) point of view, we aim at a language independent way of modelling intonation. The model presented in thi ...

We present a new family of snakes that satisfy the property of multiresolution by exploiting subdivision schemes. We show in a generic way how to construct such snakes based on an admissible subdivision mask. We derive the necessary energy formulations and ...

The problem of identifying the outline of objects in images can be approached from two starting points, either by considering localized features (landmarks, keypoints or regions), or by searching for global contours. Features are regions or points of int ...

In applications that involve interactive curve and surface modeling, the intuitive manipulation of shapes is crucial. For instance, user interaction is facilitated if a geometrical object can be manipulated through control points that interpolate the shape ...

In this thesis, we present a novel generic and unifying framework for data-adaptive shape modeling. Our work is motivated by the raising need for powerful geometric modeling kernels that are required for shape characterization in biomedical imaging. The on ...

A growing body of research on statistical applications for characterization of atmospheric aerosol Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) samples collected on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) filters (e.g., Russell et al., 2011; Ruthenburg et al., 2014) and a ri ...

Permanent metallic implants, such as dental fillings and cardiac devices, generate streaks-like artefacts in computed tomography (CT) images. In this article, we propose a strategy to perform metal artefact reduction (MAR) that relies on the total variatio ...

A long-standing conjecture of Richter and Thomassen states that the total number of intersection points between any n simple closed Jordan curves in the plane, so that any pair of them intersect and no three curves pass through the same point, is at least ...

We introduce a family of piecewise-exponential functions that have the Hermite interpolation property. Our design is motivated by the search for an effective scheme for the joint interpolation of points and associated tangents on a curve with the ability t ...

Hermite splines are commonly used for interpolating data when samples of the derivative are available, in a scheme called Hermite interpolation. Assuming a suitable statistical model, we demonstrate that this method is actually optimal for reconstructing r ...

We present a new formulation of a shape space containing all continuously defined 2D spline curves up to a similarity transform of a reference shape. We are able to measure a distance between an arbitrary curve and the shape space itself. Our contribution ...

We propose a novel active contour for the analysis of filament-like structures and boundaries—features that traditional snakes based on closed curves have difficulties to delineate. Our method relies on a parametric representation of an open curve involvin ...
