Gravity currents are density-driven flows that are able to transport high amounts of sediment and are responsible of great geomorphic changes. Moreover they can have severe repercussions on the environment since they are conveyors of substances, e.g. pollu ...

The turbulent plasma dynamics in the periphery of a fusion device plays a key role in determining its overall performance. In fact, the periphery controls the heat load on the vessel walls, the plasma confinement, the level of impurities in the core, the ...

Confluences with low discharge and momentum ratios, where narrow steep tributaries with high sediment load join a wide low-gradient main channel that provides the main discharge, are often observed in high mountain regions such as in the upper- Rhone river ...

Wind Farm Layout Optimization (WFLO) can be useful to minimize power losses associated with turbine wakes in wind farms. This work presents a new evolutionary WFLO methodology integrated with a recently developed and successfully validated Gaussian wake mo ...

Lateral cavities are built in the banks of rivers for several purposes: to create harbors, to capture sed- iment, to keep a central navigable channel (i.e., Casiers de Girardon in the Rhone river) or to promote the formation of aquatic habitats if a limite ...

A carbon solution composed of nanoparticles was used in experiments designed to explore nanoparticle transport characteristics within the hyporheic zone of a riverbed. Experiments and numerical simulations demonstrated that nanoparticle transport in the hy ...

Bedload transport rate fluctuations have been observed over time in steep rivers and flumes with wide grain size distributions even under constant sediment feeding and water discharge. The observed bedload transport rate pulses are periodic and a consequen ...

It is known that bedload fluctuates over time in steep rivers with wide grain size distributions, even under conditions of constant sediment feed and water discharge. Bedload fluctuations, which are a consequence of grain sorting, are periodic and are rela ...

Field observations in a wide range of environments have shown that sediment availability is a major control on the suspended sediment observations in streams. Here we examine, via laboratory experiments, how the amount of proximal in-channel fine sediment ...

River training works performed in the last couple of centuries constrained the natural dynamics of channel networks in locations that include the confluences between tributaries and main channels. As a result, the dynamics of these confluences are currentl ...

River channel confluences form important morphological components of any river system. This article presents the results of an investigation on a natural river confluence in Switzerland. The aim of the field work performed at the confluence of the Sarine ( ...

Mountain confluences are characterized by narrow and steep tributaries that provide important sediment load to the confluence, whereas themain channel supplies the dominant flow discharge. This results in a marked bed discordance between the tributary and ...

Geologic CO2 sequestration is considered to be the most promising technique to reduce the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Among all the storage options, deep saline aquifers have the greatest potential and due to their worldwide occurr ...

Within the fluvial network, river confluences are particular areas characterized by complex hydrodynamic, morphodynamic and sedimentary processes. These processes have been observed to be governed by parameters such as the discharge ratio, the junction ang ...

Systematic experimental investigations have been performed under uniform flow conditions in a channel whose banks are equipped with large scale rectangular roughness elements. The practical motivation of this project is to see how restoration of banks, suc ...

Vegetation roots are known to increase soil stability on hillslopes, crops and river banks, thus reducing slide hazards, surface erosion and general processes affecting lateral channel migration. Many studies have tackled this classical engineering problem ...

Gravity currents are geophysical flows responsible of the distal transport of high volumes of sediments. In particular, turbidity currents, a form of gravity currents where sediments in suspension confer the buoyancy that ignites the flow, are the main mec ...

Due to a complex three-dimensional flow pattern, the outer banks of river bends are predisposed to erosion. When endangering civil structures, preventing measures to mitigate this erosion are thus required. Vertical ribs at protection walls for scour reduc ...

Flow velocity and sedimentation patterns were investigated experimentally and numerically in shallow rectangular reservoirs with different asymmetric locations of the inlet and outlet channels. Velocity fields were measured in the entire reservoir, both fo ...

The fundamentals of flow in the liquid composite moulding (LCM) processes are reviewed with an emphasis on multiphase flow effects considering the dual-scale thin porous media constituted by the textiles, and the dynamic wetting effects observed with visco ...
