Ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) is a powerful tool to characterize the surface structure of heterogeneous catalysts in situ. In order to improve the time resolution and the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of photoemission spectra, we ...

Activation of the dinitrogen triple bond is a crucial step in the overall fixation of atmospheric nitrogen into usable forms for industrial and biological applications. Current synthetic catalysts incorporate metal ions to facilitate the activation and cle ...

Examples for applications of nitrous oxide in organic synthesis remain rare up until today. First mayor contributions of our group were published in 2012, when nitrous oxide was successfully captured by N-heterocyclic carbenes. Subsequent studies investiga ...

Nitrous oxide (N2O) has gained much interest because of its physiological effects ("laughing gas") and its negative environmental impact ("greenhouse gas", "ozone-depleting substance"): It has a lifetime of more than 100 years in the atmosphere. Its persis ...

The development of a sequential copper-catalyzed oxy-alkynylation/intramolecular [4+2] cycloaddition of allenes and arenes was investigated at first. This one-pot protocol allowed the construction of complex polycylic architectures with high efficiency fro ...

Amino alcohols, cyclopropanes and nitriles are privileged structural motifs found in the scaffold of natural products and bioactive compounds. In addition, they are versatile building blocks in organic chemistry. The development of new and increasingly eff ...

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are the ligands of choice in a large variety of transformations entailing different transition metals. However, the number of chiral NHCs suitable as stereocontrolling ligands in asymmetric catalysis remains limited. In parti ...

The synthesis and reactivity of uranium compounds supported by the tris-tert-butoxysiloxide ligand is surveyed. The multiple binding modes of the tert-butoxysiloxide ligand have proven very well suited to stabilize highly reactive homo- and heteropolymetal ...

N-Heterocyclic carbenes are able to form covalent adducts with nitrous oxide (N2O) under ambient conditions. This thesis summarizes the studies of these adducts and their reactivity. A ditopic carbanionic N-heterocyclic carbene was found to react with nit ...

The mass-utilization of fossil resources has led to a dramatic increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) production, most of which is released directly into the Earth's atmosphere, resulting in global warming. Efforts to contain CO2 emissions and to capture, store ...

The palladium-catalyzed reaction of a-haloketones with isocyanides afforded -oxo-ketenimines through alpha-hydride elimination of the beta-oxo-imidoyl palladium intermediates. Reaction of these relatively stable alpha-oxo ketenimines with nucleophiles suc ...

The electronic and steric properties of tailored cyclopentadienyl (Cp) ligands are powerful handles to modulate the catalytic properties of their metal complexes. This requires the individual preparation, purification and storage of each ligand/metal combi ...

The cyclopentane scaffold has attracted much attention due to its ubiquity in numerous bioactive natural products such as prostaglandins and polyquinanes. However, despite a plethora of available procedures to access this motif, a lack of methods that riva ...

Catalysis fulfills the promise that high-yielding chemical transformations will require little energy and produce no toxic waste. This message is carried by the study of the evolution of molecular catalysis of some of the most important reactions in organi ...

The photophysics and photochemistry of transition metal complexes (TMCs) has long been a hot field of interdisciplinary research. Rich metal-based redox processes, together with a high variety in electronic configurations and excited-state dynamics, have r ...

A new method for the synthesis of industrially important azoimidazolium dyes is presented. The procedure is based on a reagent which is rarely used in the context of synthetic organic chemistry: nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”). N2O is first coupled to N-het ...

The development of unconventional ligand scaffolds is an important aspect to alter reaction pathways of transition-metal-catalyzed reactions. The nature of the counterion of cationic metal complexes plays an important role in the catalyst reactivity. We he ...

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) react at ambient conditions with nitrous oxide to give covalent adducts. In the crystal, all compounds show a bent N2O group connected via the N-atom to the former carbene carbon atom. Most adducts are stable at room temperat ...

The dinuclear Ru(II) complexes (arene)Ru(μ-Cl)3RuCl(C2H4)(PCy3) (arene = p-cymene or 1,3,5-C6H3iPr3) react with N2O under mild conditions to give OPCy3 and the trinuclear complexes (arene)Ru(μ-Cl)3Ru(μ-Cl)3Ru(arene). The N-heterocyclic carbene complex (p-c ...

A good catch: N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) form stable adducts with nitrous oxide (N2O) under mild reaction conditions. The adducts display unique reactivity as evidenced by an alkylation reaction which leads to a rupture of the NN bond. ...
