Purpose : Based on oblique partially coherent illumination of transparent samples, we developed a simple custom Optical Phase Imaging (OPI) microscope providing a label-free, semi-quantitative phase contrast imaging. The aim of this study was to explore th ...

Designing architectural façades that allow sufficient daylight to create visually comfortable and pleasant environments is a challenging aspect of building design. It requires accounting for visual comfort and discomfort glare risks and understanding the f ...

Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) form a group of diverse disorders that lead to the degeneration of the light-sensing cells of the retina: the photoreceptors. IRDs are among the leading causes of blindness in working-age adults living in industrialized co ...

Proportional-type algorithms have attracted much attention because of their fast convergence ability for sparse system identification. To overcome the drawbacks of existing block proportional methods stemming from inadequate block partitioning, this articl ...

PURPOSE. The avian eye is an established model for exploring mechanisms that coordinate morphogenesis and metabolism during embryonic development. Less is known, however, about trafficking of bioenergetic and metabolic signaling molecules that are involved ...

the last years, increasing interest has been addressed on wearable devices for the continuous monitoring of biochemical profiles of patients and athletes. Among various markers, lactate represents one of the most interesting to deepen the knowledge on fati ...

Eye motion is a major confound for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in neuroscience or ophthalmology. Currently, solutions toward eye stabilisation include participants fixating or administration of paralytics/anaesthetics. We developed a novel MRI protoco ...

Smart thermostats are increasingly popular in homes and buildings as they improve occupant comfort, lower energy use in heating and cooling systems, and reduce utility bills by automatically adjusting room temperature according to measurements of their bui ...

Objective. Retinal stimulation in blind patients evokes the sensation of discrete points of light called phosphenes, which allows them to perform visually guided tasks, such as orientation, navigation, object recognition, object manipulation and reading. H ...

The two-dimensional (2D) delamination growth in composite laminates under the Mode-II fracture condition was experimentally investigated using a novel set-up. Circular plate specimens with a centrally embedded pre-crack of two sizes were semi-clamped along ...

Interphotoreceptor retinoid‐binding protein (IRBP) is a highly expressed protein secreted by rod and cone photoreceptors that has major roles in photoreceptor homeostasis as well as retinoid and polyunsaturated fatty acid transport between the neural retin ...

Background: Basal ganglia lesions are typical findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain in survivors of acute methanol poisoning. However, no data are available on the association between the magnitude of damaged brain regions, serum concen ...

Limestone calcined clays are a promising technology as they offer similar performance to OPC from 7 days onwards, while enabling a reduction of the clinker content of 50%. In some regions of the world like South America, pozzolanic cements (i.e., blended c ...

Embryo implantation into the uterus marks a key transition in mammalian development. In mice, implantation is mediated by the trophoblast and is accompanied by a morphological transition from the blastocyst to the egg cylinder. However, the roles of tropho ...

The technological evolution in materials science and microengineering favored the production of advanced visual prostheses useful for fighting blindness and to improve patients quality of life. Visual prostheses aim at replacing lost visual functions by ar ...

Superoxide radicals (O-2(center dot-)) have been suggested as an important chain carrier in the radical chain reaction that promotes ozone (O-3) decomposition to hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot) during ozonation. However, due to the difficulty in meas ...

An ophthalmic illumination and imaging system with transscleral / transpalpebral illumination of the eye fundus comprises a light-delivering device with a plurality of emitting areas; each of the emitting areas being configured to be independently controll ...

Cybersickness induced through Virtual Reality (VR) applications is still one of its main barriers as it can induce unwanted side-effects in players, significantly hindering the overall experience. Despite the wealth of research available on this topic, it ...

In ride-sharing, commuters with similar itineraries share a vehicle for their trip. Despite its clear benefits in terms of reduced congestion, ride-sharing is not yet widely accepted. We propose a specific ride-sharing variant, where drivers are completely ...

Most non-invasive gaze estimation methods regress gaze directions directly from a single face or eye image. However, due to important variabilities in eye shapes and inner eye structures amongst individuals, universal models obtain limited accuracies and t ...
