Bio-cementation through microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) has the potential to overcome several technical and environmental limitations of conventional cement-based soil improvement techniques. While a significant amount of research has been ...

This section of the handbook aims to provide readers with a conceptual toolbox that can enhance the reading of ideas and concepts that emerge in other sections and later chapters. This reflects that many of the ideas and directions of travel in engineering ...

Most of existing buildings are made of concrete, new buildings are being built with it and others are demolished when still in good structural condition. This drives increased demands for raw materials, greenhouse gas emissions, and an accumulation of demo ...

An efficient implementation of the capacity design requires high ductility combined with a low overstrength of the critical regions. Conventional timber connections do not generally offer such ideal combination, resulting in modest behaviour and relatively ...

Smart thermostats are increasingly popular in homes and buildings as they improve occupant comfort, lower energy use in heating and cooling systems, and reduce utility bills by automatically adjusting room temperature according to measurements of their bui ...

As acknowledged explicitly or implicitly in most of current design codes, a high level of sustained loading has a detrimental effect on the concrete compressive strength. However, its beneficial effect in terms of deformation capacity is neglected in most ...

Partially replacing ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with low-carbon supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in blended cement concrete (BCC) is perceived as the most promising route for sustainable concrete production. Despite having a lower environment ...

Valorisation of locally available clays for producing blended cements is crucial for a widespread adoption of sustainable binders incorporating these materials. In some places, clays can be intermixed with small amounts of iron sulfides, which could eventu ...

The load-carrying capacity of many reinforced concrete structures is governed by shear failures, occurring before reaching the flexural capacity of the member. For redundant systems, such as slabs subjected to concentrated loads, local shear failures (typi ...

In ride-sharing, commuters with similar itineraries share a vehicle for their trip. Despite its clear benefits in terms of reduced congestion, ride-sharing is not yet widely accepted. We propose a specific ride-sharing variant, where drivers are completely ...

The development of new adhesives has allowed to expand the application of bonding into the most diverse industrial fields. This review article presents the commonly used experimental methods for the investigation of mechanical performance of adhesively bon ...

The objective of meta-learning is to exploit knowledge obtained from observed tasks to improve adaptation to unseen tasks. Meta-learners are able to generalize better when they are trained with a larger number of observed tasks and with a larger amount of ...

Direct air capture using solid adsorbents is a proven technology critical to reducing our net greenhouse gas emissions to zero and beyond. Currently, academic research into the technology mainly focuses on the devel-opment of new adsorbents. However, there ...

Post-tensioned steel strands have been traditionally used in different prestressed structures such as concrete girders, post-tensioned concrete slabs, cable-stayed bridges, post-tensioned walls, etc. for a long time. However, due to the vulnerability of st ...

Training convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for very high-resolution images requires a large quantity of high-quality pixel-level annotations, which is extremely labor-intensive and time-consuming to produce. Moreover, professional photograph interpreter ...

The perception, physiology, behavior, and performance of building occupants are influenced by multi-domain exposures: the simultaneous presence of multiple environmental stimuli, i.e., visual, thermal, acoustic, and air quality. Despite being extensive, th ...

More and more hydropower plants are operating as regulator of renewable energy such as solar and wind energy resources. Because these renewable energy resources are highly volatile, so hydraulic turbines have to switch working condition in a wide flow rang ...

We explore the process of modeling aeolian snow transport around buildings by proposing a set of similarity requirements on simulating a single snow fall event with drifting. The similarity criteria are used to guide our wind tunnel tests from the particle ...

Free-standing masonry column is a recurrent typology of built cultural heritage. Usually raised without seismic design, columns are subject to intense rocking and overturning under strong ground motions. In this paper, a strategy to assess their seismic vu ...

Neural interfaces capable of multi-site electrical recording, on-site signal classification, and closed-loop therapy are critical for the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders. However, deploying machine learning algorithms on low-power neural ...
