Titanium-based Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) offer remarkable mechanical, thermal, and corrosion resistance properties and are of high interest to several industrial sectors, including aerospace. One of the main commercial drawbacks of these materials, wh ...

Cementitious materials show anomalous behaviour during capillary imbibition: a lack of linearity of the mass gain versus the square root of time. This is considered to be caused by the water retention in the calcium silicate (C-S-H) structure (and conseque ...

Injection molding is known to create a layered anisotropicmorphologyacross the sample thickness due to varying shear and cooling ratesduring the manufacturing process. In this study, scanning small-angleX-ray scattering was used to visualize and quantify t ...

Conventional formworks for concrete curved shells either are expensive, complex and wasteful or have formal restrictions. Using tile vaults (also known as timbrel, Guastavino, thin-tile or Catalan vaults) as stay-in-place formwork for concrete shells could ...

Sustainable development has emerged as a paramount consideration in various fields of industry, including construction, to preserve the environment and its finite resources. Lightweight structures, such as fiber-polymer composite structures, address both s ...

Ultra High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Composite (UHPFRC) is increasingly popular for new structural designs thanks to its high resistance both in tension and compression. When UHPFRC is complemented with steel reinforcing bars or prestressin ...

As acknowledged explicitly or implicitly in most of current design codes, a high level of sustained loading has a detrimental effect on the concrete compressive strength. However, its beneficial effect in terms of deformation capacity is neglected in most ...

The load-carrying capacity of many reinforced concrete structures is governed by shear failures, occurring before reaching the flexural capacity of the member. For redundant systems, such as slabs subjected to concentrated loads, local shear failures (typi ...

This paper addresses the uniaxial tensile response of Strain Hardening Ultra High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Concretes (SH-UHPFRC) subjected to very low strain rates and low temperatures. The influence of four different strain rates; 1 × 10−5, 1 × 10−7, ...

The ever-increasing demand for rehabilitation of existing structures and construction of new ones, along with environmental issues of the construction sites represent a heavy burden for society in terms of economy and environment. Meanwhile, Ultra-High Per ...

Precise and robust predictions of autogenous shrinkage of high performance concrete are essential to limit self-induced stresses and cracking in modern concrete structures. This paper presents predictions of autogenous shrinkage for three cement pastes of ...

For assessment of existing reinforced-concrete bridges, only few rules and recommendations are available, and engineers meanwhile apply design codes for new bridges to evaluate the fatigue safety of existing bridges leading to non-realistic approaches and ...

This paper investigates the behaviour of concrete failing under high stress levels and subjected to different types of loading. The aim of this investigation is to clarify the development of linear and nonlinear creep strains and how they relate to materia ...

The microcasting process is a scaled-down investment casting process in which molten metal is pressure-infiltrated and directionally solidified in water-soluble moulds. It was previously developed to produce metallic microwires with a diameter (D) between ...

In this work, resins based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy and a latent hardener, dicyandiamide (DICY), as well as carbon fiber (CF) composites based on them, were prepared with three commercial accelerators: a methylene bis (phenyl dimeth ...

A microscopic three-point bending test that measures the strength of faceted particles of high aspect ratio is developed and used to probe individual coarsened plate-like silicon particles extracted from the eutectic Al-12.6%Si alloy. Focused ion beam mill ...

Different factors such as age, location of timber within the tree, structural imperfections, load history such as wind and snow etc. can affect the material properties of timber taken from the same species, and grown in the same geographical location and l ...

Ferritic/martensitic steels are candidate materials for fusion reactor structural components, liquid metal containers of spallation neutron sources, and accelerator driven systems, with good radiation resistance and thermo-mechanical properties. However, e ...

Al-Zn-Mg(-Cu) (AA7xxx) alloys are widely used structural materials owing to their excellent mechanical properties and low corrosion susceptibility. The high strength of these materials is obtained by the formation of secondary phases, e.g. precipitation. T ...

This contribution draws practical implications of a recently published estimation of the tensile ductility in laminated composites made of two ductile materials, typically metals or alloys, which harden as both the strain and the strain-rate increase. To t ...
