Recently, adaptive non-shivering thermogenesis has attracted considerable attention because it can elevate energy expenditure and help treat obesity. Despite the numerous reports related to UCP1-driven thermogenesis, little is known regarding UCP1-independ ...

This thesis is composed of four studies centered on investigating cerebral metabolism using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) of hyperpolarized and non-hyperpolarized compounds at ultra-high field. In the first two chapters, we studied longitudinally t ...

Metabolism is the process by which cells and organisms obtain nutrients and energy to perform their functions. In the last years, many human diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and cardiac diseases, have been associated with altered metabolism. Understan ...

MR is a well-established technique routinely used in preclinical and clinical studies. This thesis focussed on the improvement of sensitivity of different methods in MR. Hyperpolarized 129Xe gas is used for studying pulmonary disease or cerebral perfusion ...

Metabolism is a network of biotransformations that sustain life in cells. Over the past decades, metabolism has been studied in multiple contexts, ranging from medicine to industrial manufacturing. In particular, lipid metabolism has been linked to various ...

According to the River Continuum Concept, headwater streams are richer in allochthonous (e.g. terrestrial leaves) than autochthonous (e.g. algae) sources of organic matter for consumers. However, compared to algae, leaf litter is of lower food quality, par ...

Background Eicosanoid lipid mediators play key roles in type 2 immune responses, for example in allergy and asthma. Macrophages represent major producers of eicosanoids and they are key effector cells of type 2 immunity. We aimed to comprehensively track e ...

The metabolic activity of tumor cells is known to be higher as compared to that of normal cells, which has been previously exploited to deliver nanomedicines to highly metabolic tumor cells. Unfortunately, current strategies, which are mostly based on comp ...

Mitochondria are the main producers of ATP, the energy currency of the cell, and they perform a wide array of other fundamental functions. These organelles are essential not only for cellular metabolism, but also for organismal physiology and lifespan. A r ...

Because the complexity of metabolism cannot be intuitively understood or analyzed, computational methods are indispensable for studying biochemistry and deepening our understanding of cellular metabolism to promote new discoveries. We used the computationa ...

BACKGROUND: The heart relies on continuous energy production and imbalances herein impair cardiac function directly. The tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle is the primary means of energy generation in the healthy myocardium, but direct noninvasive quantificati ...

Bile acids (BAs) are amphipathic molecules that facilitate the uptake of lipids, and their levels fluctuate in the intestines as well as in the circulation depending on food intake. Besides their role in dietary lipid absorption, BAs function as signaling ...

Sirtuins comprise a unique class of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD(+))-dependent deacetylases that target multiple protein substrates to execute diverse biological functions. These enzymes are key regulators of clinically important cellular and org ...
