Sharing data across institutions for genome-wide association studies (GWAS) would enhance the discovery of genetic variation linked to health and disease1,2. However, existing data-sharing regulations limit the scope of such collaborations3. Although crypt ...

AimPlant senescence largely influences the global carbon cycle by regulating the growing season length. However, the driving mechanisms of plant senescence remain unclear, particularly the role of developmental factors. This study aims to investigate how e ...

A major challenge in the common approach of hot water generation in residential houses lies in the highly stochastic nature of domestic hot water (DHW) demand. Learning hot water use behavior enables water heating systems to continuously adapt to the stoch ...

This thesis is composed of four studies centered on investigating cerebral metabolism using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) of hyperpolarized and non-hyperpolarized compounds at ultra-high field. In the first two chapters, we studied longitudinally t ...

Epileptic networks, defined as brain regions involved in epileptic brain activity, have been mapped by functional connectivity in simultaneous electroencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging (EEG-fMRI) recordings. This technique allows to ...

Chemists continuously harvest the power of non-covalent interactions to control phenomena in both the micro- and macroscopic worlds. From the quantum chemical perspective, the strategies essentially rely upon an in-depth understanding of the physical origi ...

Background and Purpose- Poststroke fatigue affects a large proportion of stroke survivors and is associated with a poor quality of life. In a recent trial, modafinil was shown to be an effective agent in reducing poststroke fatigue; however, not all patien ...

We propose a non-parametric regression method that does not rely on the structure of the ground-truth, but only on its regularity properties. The methodology can be readily used for learning surrogate models of nonlinear dynamical systems from data, while ...

Macroscopic instabilities and their unfavourable effects on plasma confinement pose a central challenge for the development of reactor relevant tokamak scenarios. Some promising operation scenarios feature extended regions of low magnetic shear. These are ...

The distribution of axon diameters (ADD) is an important white matter feature: it influences action potential speed, it has been shown to evolve during development, and also to be affected during pathological processes. Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging ...

Increasing meteorological data availability and quality implies an adaptation of the interpolation methods for data combination. In this paper, we propose a new method to efficiently combine weather radar data with data from two heated rain gauge networks ...

The extensive use of frequency-domain tools for analyzing and controlling linear systems have become indispensable for the control systems engineer. However, due to the increased performance demands on today's industrial systems, the effects of certain non ...

Despite the recent advances in sensor technologies and data-acquisition systems, interpreting measurement data for structural monitoring remains a challenge. Furthermore, because of the complexity of the structures, materials used, and uncertain environmen ...

Many state-of-the-art diarization systems for meeting recordings are based on the HMM/GMM framework and the combination of spectral (MFCC) and time delay of arrivals (TDOA) features. This paper presents an extensive study on how multistream diarization can ...

In a world of increasing exposure of populations to natural hazards, the mapping of extreme rainfall remains a key subject of study. Such maps are required for both flood risk management and civil engineering structure design, the challenge being to take i ...

Motivated by the security of the nonlinear filter generator, the concept of correlation was previously extended to the conditional correlation, that studied the linear correlation of the inputs conditioned on a given (short) output pattern of some specific ...
