Our motivation in this paper is twofold. First, we study the geometry of a class of exploration sets, called exit sets, which are naturally associated with a 2D vector-valued Gaussian Free Field:

\phi : \mathbb{Z}^2 \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^N

N \ge 1

. W ...

River engineering projects are usually designed based on the peak discharge concept. However, some river processes depend on the shape and duration of the flow hydrograph, and their modelling is particularly relevant for designing protection and retention ...

Shales are extensively studied for their roles in various geosystems, including radioactive waste disposal, CO2 sequestration, underground hydrogen storage, and oil and gas extraction. In radioactive waste repositories, gas generation, arising from corrosi ...

We investigate the conditions for the local arrest of a hydraulic fracture encountering a region of larger toughness. The propagation of a hydraulic fracture strongly depends on the ratio between the energy dissipated in the creation of new fracture surfac ...

Plant cells harness osmotic pressures to stiffen their leaves through strong turgor pressures. Key to this osmosisdriven stiffening is the confinement of liquids within semipermeable membranes that can regulate the transport of water molecules and ions. In ...

Efficient numerical simulations of coupled multi-component systems can be particularly challenging. This is mostly due to the complexity of their solutions, as mutual interactions may cause emergent behaviors, including synchronization and instabilities. V ...

Wastewater-based epidemiology offers a complementary approach to clinical case-based surveillance of emergent diseases and can help identify regions with infected people to prioritize clinical surveillance strategies. However, tracking emergent diseases in ...

ObjectiveWall shear stress (WSS) and its derived spatiotemporal parameters have proven to play a major role on intracranial aneurysms (IAs) growth and rupture. This study aims to demonstrate how ultra-high field (UHF) 7 T phase contrast magnetic resonance ...

We introduce and derive the Fourier -enhanced 3D electrostatic field solver of the gyrokinetic full -f PIC code PICLS. The solver makes use of a Fourier representation in one periodic direction of the domain to make the solving of the system easily paralle ...

We study the drainage of a viscous liquid film coating the outside of a solid horizontal cylinder, where gravity acts vertically. We focus on the limit of large Ohnesorge numbers Oh, where inertia is negligible compared to viscous effects. We first study t ...

Gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) help to reduce transport limitations in devices for electrochemical CO2 reduction. Homogenized modeling of such devices requires input of morphological characteristics and effective transport properties of the porous structu ...

This study employs the established momentum transport analysis at ASDEX Upgrade [Zimmermann et al., Nucl. Fusion 63, 124003 (2023)] to investigate the parametric variations of the momentum transport coefficients in the core of H-mode plasmas. These experim ...

Nowadays, Liquid Composite Molding techniques are often used to manufacture high quality fiber reinforced composite parts at a relatively low cost. These involve an infiltration process, in which a liquid resin is forced to ingress into a dry fibrous porou ...

Background and Objective: Cough audio signal classification is a potentially useful tool in screening for respiratory disorders, such as COVID-19. Since it is dangerous to collect data from patients with contagious diseases, many research teams have turned ...

Randomized measurement protocols such as classical shadows represent powerful resources for quantum technologies, with applications ranging from quantum state characterization and process tomography to machine learning and error mitigation. Recently, the n ...

The desire and ability to place AI-enabled applications on the edge has grown significantly in recent years. However, the compute-, area-, and power-constrained nature of edge devices are stressed by the needs of the AI-enabled applications, due to a gener ...

Blood pressure (BP) is a crucial indicator of cardiovascular health. Hypertension is a common life-threatening condition and a key factor of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Identifying abnormal BP fluctuations can allow for early detection and management o ...

We consider fluid flows, governed by the Navier-Stokes equations, subject to a steady symmetry-breaking bifurcation and forced by a weak noise acting on a slow timescale. By generalizing the multiple-scale weakly nonlinear expansion technique employed in t ...

Embroidery is a long-standing and high-quality approach to making logos and images on textiles. Nowadays, it can also be performed via automated machines that weave threads with high spatial accuracy. A characteristic feature of the appearance of the threa ...

Multiply lensed images of a same source experience a relative time delay in the arrival of photons due to the path length difference and the different gravitational potentials the photons travel through. This effect can be used to measure absolute distance ...
