The analysis of the acceleration behavior of gradient-based eigensolvers with preconditioning presents a substantial theoretical challenge. In this work, we present a novel framework for preconditioning on Riemannian manifolds and introduce a metric, the l ...

In algorithms for solving optimization problems constrained to a smooth manifold, retractions are a well-established tool to ensure that the iterates stay on the manifold. More recently, it has been demonstrated that retractions are a useful concept for ot ...

. We study very weak solutions to scalar Euler-Lagrange equations associated with quadratic convex functionals. We investigate whether W1,1 solutions are necessarily W 1,2 Nash and Schauder applicable. We answer this question positively for a suitable clas ...

In this work, we analyze space-time reduced basis methods for the efficient numerical simulation of haemodynamics in arteries. The classical formulation of the reduced basis (RB) method features dimensionality reduction in space, while finite difference sc ...

We consider the field theory that defines a perfect incompressible 2D fluid. One distinctive property of this system is that the quadratic action for fluctuations around the ground state features neither mass nor gradient term. Quantum mechanically this po ...

We define p-adic BPS or pBPS invariants for moduli spaces M-beta,M-chi of one-dimensional sheaves on del Pezzo and K3 surfaces by means of integration over a non-archimedean local field F. Our definition relies on a canonical measure mu can on the F-analyt ...

The goal of this thesis is the development and the analysis of numerical methods for problems where the unknown is a curve on a smooth manifold. In particular, the thesis is structured around the three following problems: homotopy continuation, curve inter ...

We determine the bounded cohomology of the group of homeomorphisms of certain low-dimensional manifolds. In particular, for the group of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the circle and of the closed 2-disc, it is isomorphic to the polynomial ring g ...

The sheaf-function correspondence identifies the group of constructible functions on a real analytic manifold M with the Grothendieck group of constructible sheaves on M. When M is a finite dimensional real vector space, Kashiwara-Schapira have recently in ...

We propose a structured prediction approach for robot imitation learning from demonstrations. Among various tools for robot imitation learning, supervised learning has been observed to have a prominent role. Structured prediction is a form of supervised le ...

We prove equidistribution at shrinking scales for the monochromatic ensemble on a compact Riemannian manifold of any dimension. This ensemble on an arbitrary manifold takes a slowly growing spectral window in order to synthesize a random function. With hig ...

In this article, motivated by the study of symplectic structures on manifolds with boundary and the systematic study of b-symplectic manifolds started in Guillemin, Miranda, and Pires Adv. Math. 264 (2014), 864-896, we prove a slice theorem for Lie group a ...

The design of envelopes with complex geometries often leads to construction challenges. To overcome these difficulties, resorting to discrete differential geometry proved successful by establishing close links between mesh properties and the existence of g ...

This open access book allows the reader to grasp the main bulk of fluid flow problems at a brisk pace. Starting with the basic concepts of conservation laws developed using continuum mechanics, the incompressibility of a fluid is explained and modeled, lea ...

We study the energy distribution of harmonic 1-forms on a compact hyperbolic Riemann surface S where a short closed geodesic is pinched. If the geodesic separates the surface into two parts, then the Jacobian variety of S develops into a variety that split ...

We consider the problem of provably finding a stationary point of a smooth function to be minimized on the variety of bounded-rank matrices. This turns out to be unexpectedly delicate. We trace the difficulty back to a geometric obstacle: On a nonsmooth se ...

Weak solutions arise naturally in the study of the Navier-Stokes and Euler equations both from an abstract regularity/blow-up perspective and from physical theories of turbulence. This thesis studies the structure and size of singular set of such weak solu ...

In the framework of Scale Relativity Theory, by analyzing dynamics of complex system structural units based on multifractal curves, both Schrodinger and Madelung approaches are functional and complementary. The Madelung selected approach involve synchronou ...

A gyrokinetic model is presented that can properly describe large and small amplitude electromagnetic fluctuations occurring on scale lengths ranging from the electron Larmor radius to the equilibrium perpendicular pressure gradient scale length, and the a ...

We consider the problem of sampling from a density of the form p(x) ? exp(-f (x) - g(x)), where f : Rd-+ R is a smooth function and g : R-d-+ R is a convex and Lipschitz function. We propose a new algorithm based on the Metropolis-Hastings framework. Under ...
