Cancer immunotherapy has become an attractive strategy among different therapeutic modalities over the past few years and has showed great success in the clinic. However, there are many outstanding challenges hindering the current immunotherapies. In my Ph ...

Hookworms cause a major neglected tropical disease, occurring after larvae penetrate the host skin. Neutrophils are phagocytes that kill large pathogens by releasing neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), but whether they target hookworms during skin infec ...

The innate immune system has evolved to detect pathogens through germlineencoded pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). Nucleic acid sensors, a defined class of PRRs, bind to microbial and viral nucleic acids and trigger the production of type I interferons ...

Approximately 2 billion people worldwide and a significant part of the domestic livestock are infected with soil-transmitted helminths, of which many establish chronic infections causing substantial eco-nomic and welfare burdens. Beside intensive research ...

The recognition of pathogen-derived nucleic acids is a critical mechanism by which the innate immune system detects viral infection. Upon activation, nucleic acid sensors initiate the expression of type I interferons and other inflammatory mediators, subse ...

Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare inborn error of immunity (IEI), characterized by a deficient phagocyte killing due to the inability of NADPH oxidase to produce reactive oxygen species in the phagosome. Patients with CGD suffer from severe and ...

LRH-1 (liver receptor homolog-1/NR5a2) is an orphan nuclear receptor, which regulates glucose and lipid metabolism, as well as intestinal inflammation via the transcriptional control of intestinal glucocorticoid synthesis. Predominantly expressed in epithe ...

In vitro models of human liver functions are used across a diverse range of applications in preclinical drug development and disease modeling, with particular increasing interest in models that capture facets of liver inflammatory status. This study invest ...

The objective of this study was to determine the normative bone mineral density (BMD) of cortical and trabecular bone regions in the adult glenoid and its dependence on the subject's age and sex. We analyzed computed tomography (CT) scans of 441 shoulders ...

Neuroinflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease, and the transcription factor NF-kappa B is a player in this event. We found here that the ischemic damage alone or in association with A beta(1-42) activates the NF-kappa B pathway, ...

Parkinson's disease (PD), the second most common progressive neurodegenerative disease, develops and progresses for 10-15 years before the clinical diagnostic symptoms of the disease are manifested. Furthermore, several aspects of PD pathology overlap with ...

Recent evidence suggests that snail predators may aid efforts to control the human parasitic disease schistosomiasis by eating aquatic snail species that serve as intermediate hosts of the parasite. Here, potential synergies between schistosomiasis control ...

Intestinal parasitic worms (commonly named intestinal helminths) affect close to one quarter of the world population and cause major losses for the livestock industry. These parasites establish chronic infections by modulation the immunity of their host. T ...

CD44 is a transmembrane molecule appearing in numerous isoforms generated by insertions of alternatively spliced variant exons (CD44v) and having various binding partners. CD44v7 on T cells was proposed to promote colitis by preventing T-cell apoptosis. He ...

East Coast fever (ECF) is a fatal sickness affecting cattle populations of eastern, central, and southern Africa. The disease is transmitted by the tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, and caused by the protozoan Theileria parva parva, which invades host lym ...
