This research introduces an automated methodology for visualizing gas-bearing supported turbocompressor designs utilizing CadQuery 2, a scripting Computer-Aided Design (CAD) platform. This innovative approach simplifies the traditional design process, whic ...

The construction industry plays a major role in the high levels of greenhouse gas emissions, resource consumption, and waste generation observed nowadays. Key to the circular economy, structural component reuse arises as a promising solution to divert cons ...

Load-bearing systems in buildings, significant in material use and embodied greenhouse gas emissions (EGHGE), have lacked detailed analysis on their environmental and functional relationships over time and space. This study evaluates the environmental impa ...

The probability of detecting technosignatures (i.e., evidence of technological activity beyond Earth) increases with their longevity, or the time interval over which they manifest. Therefore, the assumed distribution of longevities has some bearing on the ...

Gas bearings use pressurized gas as a lubricant to support and guide rotating machinery. These bearings have a number of advantages over traditional lubricated bearings, including higher efficiency in a variety of applications and reduced maintenance requi ...

Herringbone grooved journal bearings (HGJBs) are widely used in micro-turbocompressor applications due to their high load-carrying capacity, low friction, and oil-free solution. However, the performance of these bearings is sensitive to manufacturing devia ...

Machine learning has paved the way for the real-time monitoring of complex infrastructure and industrial systems. However, purely data-driven methods have not been able to learn the underlying dynamics and generalize them to operating conditions that have ...

Hydrogels are often employed for tissue engineering and moistening applications. However, they are rarely used for load-bearing purposes because of their limited stiffness and the stiffness-toughness compromise inherent to them. By contrast, nature uses hy ...

Structural systems are a significant contributor to buildings’ embodied carbon and reusing structural elements in new load-bearing applications is one strategy to reduce this impact. However, integrating this approach into existing design workflows without ...

Concrete accounts for the largest share of worldwide building material use and waste generation, with cement production being responsible for approximately 9% of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. A currently untapped strategy to significantly reduce thes ...

Biogeotechnical research has inspired revolutionary ideas to claim the status of a distinctive branch of geotechnical engineering. Most notably, underground carbonate mineralization, most commonly referred to as microbially induced carbonate precipitation ...

Most of existing buildings are made of concrete, new buildings are being built with it and others are demolished when still in good structural condition. This drives increased demands for raw materials, greenhouse gas emissions, and an accumulation of demo ...

The nonlinear behavior of a rigid rotor supported by herringbone grooved journal gas bearings (HGJBs) was investigated in this study. The two-dimensional narrow groove theory (2D-NGT) was adopted to model the HGJBs. A set of integrated rotor-bearing state ...

The dynamic behavior of spiral-grooved gas bearing supported four degrees-of-freedom (DOF) rotors is investigated by means of linearized bearing force coefficients and full time-integrated transient analysis. The transient method consists of a state-space ...

Deployable gridshells are a class of planar-to-spatial structures that achievea 3D curved geometry by inducing bending on a flat grid of elastic beams. However, theslender nature of these beams often conflicts with the structure’s load-bearing capacity. To ...

This paper presents measurements of the motion amplitudes from flexibly supported Herringbone Grooved Journal Bearing bushings. Measurements taken in four locations on the flexibly supported bearing bushing enable the distinction between the radial and the ...

Designing turbocompressors is a complex and challenging task, as it involves balancing conflicting objectives such as efficiency, stability, and robustness against manufacturing deviations. This paper proposes an integrated design methodology for turbocomp ...

The aim of this paper is to introduce a new mathematical model that simulates myocardial blood perfusion that accounts for multiscale and multiphysics features. Our model incorporates cardiac electrophysiology, active and passive mechanics, hemodynamics, v ...

We present a computational inverse design method for a new class of surface-based inflatable structure. Our deployable structures are fabricated by fusing together two layers of inextensible sheet material along carefully selected curves. The fusing curves ...
