Recent advances in Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithms and methodologies, combined with the surge of computational power of available embedded platforms, allows the use of real-time optimization-based control of fast mechatronic systems. This paper p ...

In this paper a new nonlinear identification method for microgrids based on neural networks is proposed. The system identification process can be done using the available closed-loop system input/output data recorded during normal operation without additio ...

Hypothesis: The dynamics of colloidal suspension confined within porous materials strongly differs from that in the bulk. In particular, within porous materials, the presence of boundaries with complex shapes entangles the longitudinal and transverse degre ...

This article proposes an enhanced adaptive time delay controller (ATDC) for robot manipulators subjected to external disturbances. This approach is model-free and uses time delay estimation (TDE) to estimate complex and unknown robot dynamics. First, to re ...

This article examines the importance of integrating locomotion and cognitive information for achieving dynamic locomotion from a viewpoint combining biology and ecological psychology. We present a mammalian neuromusculoskeletal model from external sensory ...

In this study, we analyze a 3rd type of FBAR's fundamental mode by finite element method. We show the importance of the substrate's wave velocity and conductivity on the electromechanical coupling efficiency. Then we demonstrate that etching traditional SA ...

Dielectric elastomers are soft actuators, made of an elastomer membrane sandwiched by compliant electrodes. Because of their high energy density and quick response, they are well suited for dynamic applications such as loudspeakers. Thanks to progress in t ...

Objective: The extent of plastic responses of motor cortex (M1) to paired associative stimulation (PAS) varies among healthy subjects. Continuous theta-burst stimulation (cTBS) of cerebellum enhances the mean PAS-induced plasticity in groups of healthy sub ...

We present a methodology to learn explicit Model Predictive Control (eMPC) laws from sample data points with tunable complexity. The learning process is cast in a special Neural Network setting where the coefficients of two linear layers and a parametric q ...

Although it is known that having accurate Lipschitz estimates is essential for certain models to deliver good predictive performance, refining this constant in practice can be a difficult task especially when the input dimension is high. In this letter, we ...

Solute accelerated cross-slip of pyramidal < c + a > screw dislocations has recently been recognized as a crucial mechanism in enhancing the ductility of solid-solution Mg alloys. In pure Mg, cross-slip is ineffective owing to the energy difference between ...

Hydrogen embrittlement (HE) is a ubiquitous and catastrophic mode of fracture in metals. Here, embrittlement is considered as an intrinsic ductile-brittle transition at the crack tip, where H at the crack tip can reduce the stress intensity K-Ic for cleava ...

The yield strength of random metal alloys, i.e. alloys with random occupation of the crystalline lattice sites by the elemental constituent atoms all considered as solutes, is primarily understood as controlled by solute/dislocation interactions. Solute-so ...

Water as a medium poses a number of challenges for robots, limiting the progress of research in underwater robotics vis-a-vis ground or aerial robotics. The primary challenges are satellite based positioning and radio communication being unusable due to hi ...

The increase of the effective efficiency of the internal combustion engines is important for the fuel consumption reduction and the CO2 emission reduction. The variable engine valve trains are important for the gas exchanges and influence directly the effe ...

One of the major drawbacks of selective laser melting (SLM) is the accumulation of tensile residual stresses (TRS) in the surface and subsurface zones of produced parts which can lead to cracking, delamination, geometrical distortions, and a decrease in fa ...

We consider sets L = {l(1),..., l(n)} of n labeled lines in general position in R-3, and study the order types of point sets {p(1),..., p(n)} that stem from the intersections of the lines in L with (directed) planes Pi, not parallel to any line of L, that ...

The integration of renewable energy in the built environment, improving the energy efficiency of buildings, and optimizing distributed energy systems are three interconnected activities that are central for the transition to sustainable cities. Here, a met ...

Real-time control of electric grids is a novel approach to handling the increasing penetration of distributed and volatile energy generation brought about by renewables. Such control occurs in cyber-physical systems (CPSs), in which software agents maintai ...

Despite increasing attention for the recently found ferro- and antiferroelectric properties, the polymorphism in hafnia- and zirconia-based thin films is still not sufficiently understood. In the present work, we show that it is important to have a good qu ...
