In this paper we introduce and study the STREAMINGCYCLES problem, a random order streaming version of the Boolean Hidden Hypermatching problem that has been instrumental in streaming lower bounds over the past decade. In this problem the edges of a graph G ...

This research study addresses issues of transport modeling aiming to the recognition of vehicles, with perspective to generate a knowledge base for an automatic recognition of vehicles from similar type of data. Based on two datasets consisted of multi-spe ...

With the technological evolution of digital acquisition and storage technologies, millions of images and video sequences are captured every day and shared in online services. One way of exploring this huge volume of images and videos is through searching a ...

We study the problem of navigating/searching through a database of objects with potentially different popularities using a membership oracle. The membership oracle, given a subset of objects

A

, and a target object

t

, determines whether

A

contains

t

In distributed optimization, parameter updates from the gradient computing node devices have to be aggregated in every iteration on the orchestrating server. When these updates are sent over an arbitrary commodity network, bandwidth and latency can be limi ...

This paper reports and investigates paradoxical simulation results of the bouncing ball system. Chaos-like motion of the bouncing ball system with intermittent chattering (Zeno behavior) is observed in simulations if the relative acceleration of the table ...

We propose an approach to overcome the two main challenges of 3D multiview object detection and localization: The variation of object features due to changes in the viewpoint and the variation in the size and aspect ratio of the object. Our approach procee ...

In this paper we describe a mathematical and numerical approach that combines physics-based simulated ground motion caused by earthquakes with fragility functions to model the structural damages induced to buildings. To simulate earthquake ground motion we ...

We propose and analyze a finite-difference discretization of the Ambrosio-Tortorelli functional. It is known that if the discretization is made with respect to an underlying periodic lattice of spacing ffi, the discretized functionals Gamma-converge to the ...

Tracking moving objects is a critical step for smart video surveillance systems. Despite the complexity increase, multiple camera systems exhibit the undoubted advantages of covering wide areas and handling the occurrence of occlusions by exploiting the di ...

The power of an object type T can be measured as the maximum number n of processes that can solve consensus using only objects of T and registers. This number, denoted cons(T), is called the consensus power of T. This paper addresses the question of the we ...

Pattern matching is a programming language construct considered essential in functional programming. Its purpose is to inspect and decompose data. Instead, object-oriented programming languages do not have a dedicated construct for this purpose. A possible ...

Knowledge graph embeddings rank among the most successful methods for link prediction in knowledge graphs, i.e., the task of completing an incomplete collection of relational facts. A downside of these models is their strong sensitivity to model hyperparam ...

The treatment of two-dimensional random walks in the quarter plane leads to Markov processes which involve semi-infinite matrices having Toeplitz or block Toeplitz structure plus a low-rank correction. We propose an extension of the framework introduced in ...

We study the set of possible configurations for a general kinetically constrained model (KCM), a nonmonotone version of the U-bootstrap percolation cellular automata. We solve a combinatorial question that, is a generalization of a problem addressed by Chu ...

In this paper, we propose a new variational model to segment an object belonging to a given shape space using the active contour method, a geometric shape prior and the Mumford-Shah functional. The core of our model is an energy functional composed by thre ...

The inception of object-oriented programming introduces a category of bugs related to object construction: initialization errors. Every newly created object goes through several initialization states: starting from a state where all fields are uninitialize ...

We study asymmetric zero-range processes on Z with nearest-neighbour jumps and site disorder. The jump rate of particles is an arbitrary but bounded nondecreasing function of the number of particles. For any given environment satisfying suitable averaging ...
