With an on-going disproportional warming of the Arctic Ocean and the reduction of the sea ice cover, the risk of an accidental oil spill from ships or future oil exploration is increasing. It is hence important to know how crude oil weathers in this enviro ...

Aerosols play a significant role in the atmosphere through affecting the radiative budget, cloud condensation nuclei activity, and visibility. They also cause adverse health effects leading to premature deaths. A major fraction of aerosols is organic matte ...

Five years in the making, a massive oil spill of 1 million barrels is imminent in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen. Emergent action must be taken by the United Nations and its International Maritime Organization (IMO) to remove the oil, despite regional ...

In this work, we investigate the role of hydrocarbons in changing the petrophysical properties of rocks by merging laboratory measurements, outcrops characterization, and subsurface data focusing on a carbonate-bearing reservoir (Bolognano Formation) of th ...

Interest in the hydraulic and mechanical characterization of shales has grown in recent years, because of their application in the context of energy geotechnics. In the frame of nuclear waste disposal shales are considered as host formations for the placem ...

The thermo-catalytic synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO2 and H2 is of great interest for the conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals and fuels. In this work, we aim to contribute to the fundamental understanding of the effect of alloying on the reaction y ...

Lignocellulosic biomass is a sustainable source of renewable carbon, and it is the most abundant form of terrestrial biomass. The three main constituents of lignocellulosic biomass are cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. The monomers from these biopolyme ...

Interfacial phase transitions are of fundamental importance for climate, industry, and biological processes. In this work, we observe a hydration mediated surface transition in supercooled oil nanodroplets in aqueous solutions using second harmonic and sum ...

We model oil price dynamics in a general equilibrium production economy with two goods: a consumption good and oil. Production of the consumption good requires drawing from oil reserves at a fixed rate. Investment necessary to replenish oil reserves is cos ...

Anthropogenic releases of petroleum fluids, which contain thousands of compounds, represent a threat to marine environments. However, there was a lack of models able to explain the independent behaviors of the numerous compounds of a spilled petroleum flui ...

With the expansion of offshore petroleum extraction, validated models are needed to simulate the behaviors of petroleum compounds released in deep (>100 m) waters. We present a thermodynamic model of the densities, viscosities, and gas-liquid-water partiti ...

Temperature-dependent sum-frequency scattering spectroscopy is used to study the properties of hexadecane and dodecane oil droplets in water. The sum-frequency scattering spectra contain vibrational bands that correspond to the symmetric and antisymmetric ...

The present study focused on the thermal hydraulic performance improvement of a CO2 gas cooler with the principal goal of reducing its volume, and consequently the necessary charge of the working fluid. To achieve this compactness, the leading methods for ...

Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) depends on the in situ microbial activity to release trapped oil in reservoirs. In practice, undesired consumption is a universal phenomenon but cannot be observed effectively in small-scale physical simulations due t ...

Biodegradation plays a major role in the natural attenuation of oil spills. However, limited information is available about biodegradation of different saturated hydrocarbon classes in surface environments, despite that oils are composed mostly of saturate ...

Qualitative and quantitative analyte analysis is omnipresent: from quality control in food, pharmaceutical, biotechnology industries, to new molecular syntheses, detection of explosives and drugs, as well as natural compound mixture analysis, such as crude ...

Following the release of crude oil from the Macondo well in 2010, a wide range of weathering processes acted on the spilled oil. A recent study revealed that samples from this spill were oxidized into oxygenated hydrocarbons (OxHC) comprising more than 50% ...

Widespread use of petrochemicals often leads to accidental releases in aquatic environments, occasionally with disastrous results. We have developed a hydrophobic and oleophilic mesh that separates oil from water continuously in situ via capillary action, ...

The performance of the high-field Orbitrap Fourier transform mass spectrometer (FTMS) is evaluated in the context of petroleum sample analysis. Pertinent characteristics including resolving power, mass accuracy, and spectral dynamic range are tested with r ...

This paper presents a numerical model to predict laminar film condensation heat transfer in small channels of different internal geometries for miscible refrigerant-oil mixtures. The model includes the contributions of surface tension, axial shear stresses ...
