Titanium-based Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) offer remarkable mechanical, thermal, and corrosion resistance properties and are of high interest to several industrial sectors, including aerospace. One of the main commercial drawbacks of these materials, wh ...

Ultrasensitive nanomechanical instruments, e.g. atomic force microscopy (AFM), can be used to perform delicate biomechanical measurements and reveal the complex mechanical environment of biological processes. However, these instruments are limited because ...

Implanted brain electrodes provide a unique way of electrically interfacing with individual neurons in vivo. However, chronic recording or stimulating capabilities of neural implants are often impaired by a strong immune response resulting in a fibrous sca ...

The load-carrying capacity of many reinforced concrete structures is governed by shear failures, occurring before reaching the flexural capacity of the member. For redundant systems, such as slabs subjected to concentrated loads, local shear failures (typi ...

Triaxial testing of argillaceous rocks and shales is significantly more challenging than conventional rock mechanical testing. The challenges are mainly related to the very low permeability of these geomaterials, and their sensitivity to exposure of atmosp ...

Seismological observations highlighted that earthquakes are often followed by changes in elastic properties around the fault zone. Here, we studied the origin of these variations using stick-slip experiments on saw-cut granite samples presenting different ...

Nanomaterials and nanoparticles are nowadays used in a wide range of applications; from sunscreens, paint and food industry to catalytic processes, lighting, TV's and displays, their presence is percolating in our daily life. New applications rise every da ...

The ever-increasing demand for rehabilitation of existing structures and construction of new ones, along with environmental issues of the construction sites represent a heavy burden for society in terms of economy and environment. Meanwhile, Ultra-High Per ...

A variable stiffness device, including a core including a low melting point alloy, an encapsulation surrounding the core, the encapsulation made of an elastic material and sealing the core, and a heating device arranged around the encapsulation, configured ...

Different factors such as age, location of timber within the tree, structural imperfections, load history such as wind and snow etc. can affect the material properties of timber taken from the same species, and grown in the same geographical location and l ...

The motion of an initially spherical capsule in a wall-bounded oscillating shear flow is investigated via an accelerated boundary integral implementation. The neo-Hookean model is used as the constitutive law of the capsule membrane. The maximum wall-norma ...

Ultrafast acoustics measurements on liquid mercury have been performed at high pressure and temperature in a diamond anvil cell using picosecond acoustic interferometry. We extract the density of mercury from adiabatic sound velocities using a numerical it ...

Aim: Atomic force microscopy nanoindentation of myofibers was used to assess and quantitatively diagnose muscular dystrophies from human patients. Materials & methods: Myofibers were probed from fresh or frozen muscle biopsies from human dystrophic patient ...

Stress relief treatment before machining and sawing aluminium direct chill cast products is required to avoid uncontrolled distortion, crack formation and significant safety concerns due to the presence of thermally induced residual stresses created during ...

Engineering synthetic hydrogels on a molecular basis to introduce natural features that are important in instructing cell behavior is becoming increasingly crucial in biomaterial-based approaches for regenerative medicine and in cell biology to study cell– ...

Vanadium oxide nanotubes with a diameter of 20-100 nm and an aspect ratio of 50-100 were synthesized by hydrothermal method. Young's modulus of 20-80 GPa was obtained by bending measurements of individual nanotubes using an atomic force microscope. Electri ...

A novel method is presented for estimating the elastic and dissipative parameters of composite plates and shells through a mixed numerical-experimental identification procedure based on the natural frequencies, modal damping factors and mode shapes of the ...

Diamond reinforced metals with a diamond content of 55-60 vol.% were made by gas driven liquid metal infiltration. They were characterized with regard to their stiffness, strength and fracture toughness as a function of diamond particle size and matrix all ...

The complex mechanical modulus of polymer and polymer based composite materials showed a frequency-dependent behaviour during glass transition relaxation, which was historically modelled by the Arrhenius equation. However, this might not be true in a broad ...

A method of analyzing a sample with a probe based measurement instrument using stiffness tomography. Stiffness or elastic modulus data obtained through contact measurement with the sample as a function of depth is used in the detection of features, particu ...
