Systems and methods for monitoring penile tumescence are provided that overcome the drawbacks of previously known systems by providing a wearable formed of a flexible and elastic tube having a plurality of sensors disposed on or embedded within it, the wea ...

While the task of automatically detecting eating events has been examined in prior work using various wearable devices, the use of smartphones as standalone devices to infer eating events remains an open issue. This paper proposes a framework that infers e ...

Smartphones present many interesting opportunities for survey research, particularly through the use of mobile data collection applications (apps). There is still much to learn, however, about how to integrate apps in general population surveys. Recent stu ...

Weight loss is key to controlling the increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its components, i.e., central obesity, hypertension, prediabetes and dyslipidaemia. The goals of our study were two-fold. First, we characterised the relationships b ...

Understanding food consumption patterns and contexts using mobile sensing is fundamental to build mobile health applications that require minimal user interaction to generate mobile food diaries. Many available mobile food diaries, both commercial and in r ...

Smartphone applications that use passive sensing to support human health and well-being primarily rely on: (a) generating low-dimensional representations from high-dimensional data streams; (b) making inferences regarding user behavior; and (c) using those ...

Power-Force-Velocity profile obtained during a sprint test is crucial for designing personalized training and evaluating injury risks. Estimation of instantaneous velocity is requisite for developing these profiles and the predominant method for this estim ...

Background: Physical activity and sleep are behavioral risk factors for cancer that may be influenced by environmental exposures, including built and natural environments. However, many studies in this area are limited by residence-based exposure assessmen ...

Over a third of the world 's population owns a smartphone. As generic computing devices that support a large and heterogeneous collection of mobile applications (apps), smartphones provide a plethora of functionalities and services to billions of users. B ...

Millions of users rely on mobile health (mHealth) apps to manage their wellness and medical conditions. Although the popularity of such apps continues to grow, several privacy and security challenges can hinder their potential. In particular, the simple fa ...

For most women of reproductive age, assessing menstrual health and fertility typically involves regular visits to a gynecologist or another clinician. While these evaluations provide critical information on an individual's reproductive health status, they ...

Background. Body image disturbance (BID) is a core symptom of anorexia nervosa (AN), but as yet distinctive features of BID are unknown. The present study aimed at disentangling perceptual and attitudinal components of BID in AN. ...

This study uses novel biometric figure rating scales (FRS) spanning body mass index (BMI) 13.8 to 32.2kg/m(2) and BMI 18 to 42kg/m(2). The aims of the study were (i) to compare FRS body weight dissatisfaction and perceptual distortion of women with anorexi ...

While social data is being widely used in various applications such as sentiment analysis and trend prediction, its sheer size also presents great challenges for storing, sharing and processing such data. These challenges can be addressed by data summariza ...

Third party applications work on top of existing platforms that host users’ data. Although these apps access this data to provide users with specific services, they can also use it for monetization or profiling purposes. In practice, there is a significant ...

In recent years there has been a proliferation of privately owned sensing devices such as GPS devices, cameras, home weather stations and, more importantly, smart-phones. Most of these devices are either intrinsically mobile, e.g., smart-phones and GPS dev ...

Objective: Although low weight is a key factor contributing to the high mortality in anorexia nervosa (AN), it is unclear how AN patients sustain low weight compared with bulimia nervosa (BN) patients with similar psychopathology. Studies of genes involved ...
