To understand how daylight gives shape and life to architectural spaces, whether existing or imagined, requires quantifying its dynamism and energy. Maintaining these details presents a challenge to simulation and analysis methods that flatten data into di ...

: Occupants’ visual comfort in an indoor space strongly depend on the quantity and quality of the daylight inside the space which can be altered with the type of window glazing. In this study, we compared the visual comfort perception of participants with ...

Differentiable physically-based rendering has become an indispensable tool for solving inverse problems involving light. Most applications in this area jointly optimize a large set of scene parameters to minimize an objective function, in which case revers ...

Light enables to see the world around us, while playing a key role in our biological functioning. During the last decades, light has become an important research topic for chronobiologists and neuroscientists, and their findings are increasingly interwoven ...

Physically based rendering is a process for photorealistic digital image synthesis and one of the core problems in computer graphics. It involves simulating the light transport, i.e. the emission, propagation, and scattering of light through a virtual scen ...

A Bidirectional Scattering Distribution Function (BSDF) describes how light from each incident direction is scattered (reflected and transmitted) by a simple or composite surface, such as a window shade. Compact, tabular BSDFs may be derived via interpolat ...

Monte Carlo light transport simulations often lack robustness in scenes containing specular or near-specular materials. Widely used uni- and bidirectional sampling strategies tend to find light paths involving such materials with insufficient probability, ...

Path tracing is now the standard method used to generate realistic imagery in many domains, e.g., film, special effects, architecture etc. Path guiding has recently emerged as a powerful strategy to counter the notoriously long computation times required t ...

Objective Temperature–color interaction effects on subjective perception and physiological responses are investigated using a novel hybrid experimental method combining thermal and visual stimuli from real and virtual reality (VR) environments, respectivel ...

The design of highly glazed building has become a worldwide trend in modern architecture. However, glazing may induce large thermal loss in winter while increase cooling load in summer, and it may also cause glare. In order to solve the problems, a novel m ...

Well-designed electrochromic (EC) glazing control can improve the energy performance of buildings and visual comfort of occupants in highly glazed buildings. This paper designed and demonstrated a compact integrated EC glazing automation system to control ...

Modern rendering systems are confronted with a dauntingly large and growing set of requirements: in their pursuit of realism, physically based techniques must increasingly account for intricate properties of light, such as its spectral composition or polar ...

Sufficient daylight exposure contributes to occupants' productivity and health in buildings. However, excessive daylight ingress induces discomfort glare and increases the cooling load in warm seasons. The performance of manual shading systems is limited b ...

Following the path initiated by Britain and the United States, where the evolution of education and the importance of the architecture of schools were debated vigorously by school boards, and mainly under the influence of Germany and the Netherlands, Switz ...

Over the past years, increasing efforts have been devoted to understand how people perceive the indoor environment with the goal to improve building design and operation. Studies have separately addressed the effects of the four main aspects that influence ...

Within the scope of a broader research project about daylight and temperature interaction effects on human responses, this paper investigates how daylight transmitted through spectrally selective glazing (blue, orange and a reference neutral) affects therm ...

Physically based spectral rendering has become increasingly important in recent years. However, asset textures in such systems are usually still drawn or acquired as RGB tristimulus values. While a number of RGB to spectrum upsampling techniques are availa ...

This paper details the results of an experimental study investigating the influence of daylight illuminance levels and indoor temperatures on objective and subjective performance evaluations, investigated through paper-based tasks and questionnaires, respe ...

A novel glazing system consisting of a polymer layer with embedded micro compound parabolic concentrators (CPCs), which is attached to a glass pane of glazing, is proposed. It aims to reduce the energy consumption due to cooling in buildings, provide dayli ...

Daylit architecture is perceived as a dynamic luminous composition, yet most existing performance metrics were designed to evaluate natural illumination for its ability to adequately illuminate a two-dimensional task surface and avoid glare-based discomfor ...
