Planning multicontact motions in a receding horizon fashion requires a value function to guide the planning with respect to the future, e.g., building momentum to traverse large obstacles. Traditionally, the value function is approximated by computing traj ...

In this thesis, we address the complex issue of collision avoidance in the joint space of robots. Avoiding collisions with both the robot's own body parts and obstacles in the environment is a critical constraint in motion planning and is crucial for ensur ...

Quadratic Programming (QP)-based controllers allow many robotic systems, such as humanoids, to successfully undertake complex motions and interactions. However, these approaches rely heavily on adequately capturing the underlying model of the environment a ...

Soft robotics requires effective tools to educate the next generation of engineers and researchers. Stemming from a lack of universally accepted principles for education and with high barriers to entry in terms of fabrication and hardware, education to dat ...

In Receding Horizon Planning (RHP), it is critical that the motion being executed facilitates the completion of the task, e.g. building momentum to overcome large obstacles. This requires a value function to inform the desirability of robot states. However ...

We have all been one such student or seen such students who can maintain the 'good student' image while playing a video game under the table or those loyal backbenchers, seemingly always distracted, who then ace their exams. These intricacies of human beha ...

Wizard of Oz, a very commonly employed technique in human-robot interaction, faces the criticism of being deceptive as the humans interacting with the robot are told, if at all, only at the end of their interaction that there was in fact a human behind the ...

Robots are employed to assist humans in lengthy, challenging, and repetitive tasks. However, the fields of rehabilitation, haptics, and assistive robotics have shown a significant need to support and interact with people in their everyday life. To facilita ...

In this letter, we propose a real-time self-collision avoidance approach for whole-body humanoid robot control. To achieve this, we learn the feasible regions of control in the humanoid's joint space as smooth self-collision boundary functions. Collision-f ...

Probability distributions are key components of many learning from demonstration (LfD) approaches, with the spaces chosen to represent tasks playing a central role. Although the robot configuration is defined by its joint angles, end-effector poses are oft ...

Bio-inspired robotic designs introducing and benefiting from morphological aspects present in animals allowed the generation of fast, robust, and energy-efficient locomotion. We used engineering tools and interdisciplinary knowledge transferred from biolog ...

We report on a follow-up study of the Co-Writer project at EPFL [1]; we confirm their findings, extend the applicability to another language with a different alphabet (Greek) and go into an in-depth qualitative study of the child-robot relationship. The co ...

The method for controlling a single- or multi- powered robotic system, such as an exoskeleton, a prosthesis or a collaborative robot, that is physically interacting with a user, said system comprising at least one actuated joint; wherein the robot joint(s) ...

It is a well-established fact in the field of Human-Robot Interaction that the personality a social robot is endowed with (i.e., the one it expresses by its gestures and words) plays a key role towards the engagement experienced by any person interacting w ...

Mobility in an effective and socially-compliant manner is an essential yet challenging task for robots operating in crowded spaces. Recent works have shown the power of deep reinforcement learning techniques to learn socially cooperative policies. However, ...

Most human-robot interfaces, such as joysticks and keyboards, require training and constant cognitive effort and provide a limited degree of awareness of the robots’ state and its environment. Embodied interactions, that is the bidirectional link between t ...

Modular robots (MRs) consist of similar modules that can be configured into different shapes. MRs introduce a number of benefits over conventional robots specifically designed for a task. Self-reconfigurable modular robots (SRMRs) are a sub-category of MRs ...

Sprawling posture robots are characterized by upper limb segments protruding horizontally from the body, resulting in lower body height and wider support on the ground. Combined with an actuated segmented spine and tail, such morphology resembles that of s ...

Social robots are being used to create better educational scenarios, thereby fostering children's learning. In the work presented here, we describe an autonomous social robot that was designed to enhance children's handwriting skills. Exploiting the benefi ...

Continual developments in robotic technology have enabled the use of robots in everyday applications in domestic, office and public spaces. Although single robot problems have been the main focus of social robotics research, applications of robots in socia ...
