Pharmacological treatments targeting CXC chemokines and the associated neutrophil activation and recruitment into atherosclerotic plaques hold promise for treating cardiovascular disorders. Therefore, we investigated whether FK866, a nicotinamide phosphori ...

Angiotensin (Ang)-(1-7), acting through the receptor Mas, has athero-protective effects; however, its role on plaque vulnerability has been poorly studied. Here, we investigated the expression of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) components in stable and ...

Over the last two decades, we have witnessed an increasing application of mathematical models and numerical simulations for the study of the cardiovascular system. Indeed, both tools provide an important contribution to the analysis of the functioning of t ...

The solution of inverse problems in cardiovascular mathematics is computationally expensive. In this paper we apply a domain parametrization technique to reduce both the geometrical and computational complexity of the forward problem, and replace the finit ...

Neutrophilic inflammation might have a pathophysiological role in both carotid plaque rupture and ischemic stroke injury. Here, we investigated the potential benefits of the CXC chemokine-binding protein Evasin-3, which potently inhibits chemokine bioactiv ...

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the gold standard treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. However, the physiologic impact of CPAP on cerebral blood flow (CBF) is not well established. Ultrasound can be used to estimate CBF, but there is no wid ...

Simulating arterial trees in the cardiovascular system can be made by the help of different models, depending on the outputs of interest and the desired degree of accuracy. In particular, one-dimensional fluid-structure interaction models for arteries are ...

Aging and atherosclerosis are well-recognized risk factors for cardiac and neurovascular diseases. The Apolipoprotein E deficient (ApoE-/-) mouse on a high-fat diet is a classical model of atherosclerosis, characterized by the presence of atherosclerotic p ...

Blood flow in the arterial circulation induces hemodynamic forces that play an important role in various forms of vascular diseases. Temporal variation of the wall shear stress seems to play a significant role in atherogenesis and plaque stability. Flow in ...

The activation of cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CB2)-mediated pathways might represent a promising anti-atherosclerotic treatment. Here, we investigated the expression of the endocannabinoid system in human carotid plaques and the impact of CB2 pharmacologi ...

Collagen plays an important role in the response of the arterial wall to mechanical loading and presumably has a load-bearing function preventing overdistension. Collagen configuration is important for understanding this role, in particular in mathematical ...

This thesis is a contribution to the field of interstitial cells of Cajal-like cells (ICC-LCs) in the vasculature. Indeed, cells with irregular shapes and numerous long thin filaments, morphologically similar to the gastrointestinal ICCs, have been observe ...

Decrease in arterial compliance leads to an increased pulse pressure, as explained by the Windkessel effect. Pressure waveform is the sum of a forward running and a backward running or reflected pressure wave. When the arterial system stiffens, as a result ...
