The invention of 3D atomic force microscopy (3D-AFM) has enabled visualizing subnanoscale 3D hydration structures. Meanwhile, its applications to imaging flexible molecular chains have started to be experimentally explored. However, the validity and princi ...

Biomolecular condensates play important roles in a wide array of fundamental biological processes, such as cellular compartmentalization, cellular regulation, and other biochemical reactions. Since their discovery and first observations, an extensive and e ...

Strain is an inevitable phenomenon in two-dimensional (2D) material, regardless of whether the film is suspended or supported. Moreover, strain is known to alter the physical and chemical properties, such as the band gap, charge carrier effective masses, d ...

Injection molding is known to create a layered anisotropicmorphologyacross the sample thickness due to varying shear and cooling ratesduring the manufacturing process. In this study, scanning small-angleX-ray scattering was used to visualize and quantify t ...

This thesis focuses on the interdisciplinary biophysical research field, in which physical approaches are applied to study the biological phenomena. Specifically, the main object of the research in this thesis is to target biological species, especially the ...

Optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) can only occur in noncentrosymmetric crystals in the leading electric-dipole approximation. Transition metal dichalcogenides with the 1T octahedral coordination is centrosymmetric, hence precluding SHG. Here we repo ...

We develop a reduced model for hard-magnetic, thin, linear-elastic shells that can be actuated through an external magnetic field, with geometrically exact strain measures. Assuming a reduced kinematics based on the Kirchhoff-Love assumption, we derive a r ...

We demonstrate a novel method for fabricating single crystal diamond diffraction gratings based on crystallographic etching that yields high-quality diffraction gratings from commercially available diamond plates. Both V-groove and rectangular gratin ...

In Atomic force microscopy (AFM), the tip-sample interaction force can be measured through two primary detection techniques: optical beam detection (OBD) and electrical (self-sensing) readout. Compared to the optical method, the convenience of the self-sen ...

The magnetic force microscope (MFM) is an established experimental tool for imaging stray fields with high spatial resolution and sensitivity. The MFM contrast can however contain contributions from the sample topography, variations in the surface Kelvin p ...

As technology advances, surface coatings become more and more important to assure materials performances. In recent years, molecular coatings have found larger acceptance and uses. Among them, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are attractive because they ar ...

We report thorough measurements of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) running along nearly perfect air-gold interfaces formed by atomically flat surfaces of chemically synthesized gold monocrystals. By means of amplitude-and phase-resolved near-field micros ...

Herein is reported a surface-confined microscopy based on electrochemiluminescence (ECL) which allows to image the plasma membrane of single cells at the interface with an electrode. By analyzing photoluminescence (PL), ECL and AFM images of mammalian CHO ...

In an idealized infinite crystal, the material properties are constrained by the symmetries of the unit cell. The point-group symmetry is broken by the sample shape of any finite crystal, but this is commonly unobservable in macroscopic metals. To sense th ...

The scanning thermal microscope (SThM) has become a versatile tool for local surface temperature mapping or measuring thermal properties of solid materials. In this article, we present recent improvements in a SThM system, based on a micro-wire thermocoupl ...

Biomolecular functional complexes often serve as inspiration for the development of artificial molecular nanostructures. The functionality of the biomolecular structures is based on complex and adaptable binding motifs that have evolved over billions of ye ...

The ever growing demand for the development of new technologies and materials has led to extensive studies inspired by biological functional complexes. Peptides with their outstanding ability to efficiently self-assemble can express a broad spectrum of int ...

The polarization and strain response of ferroelectric materials at electric fields below the macroscopic coercive field is of paramount importance for the operation of many electronic devices. The response of real ferroelectric and related materials is, in ...

Defects are key to enhance or deploy particular materials properties. In this thesis I present analyses of the impact of defects on the electronic structure of materials using combined experimental and theoretical Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) i ...
