In vitro skin models are validated methods for screening cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, but still have limitations. The bilayer poly(epsilon-caprolactone) scaffold/membrane model described here overcomes some of these deficits by integrating a solution ele ...

Photometric stereo, a computer vision technique for estimating the 3D shape of objects through images captured under varying illumination conditions, has been a topic of research for nearly four decades. In its general formulation, photometric stereo is an ...

Ultrafast ultrasound imaging, characterized by high frame rates, generates low-quality images. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have demonstrated great potential to enhance image quality without compromising the frame rate. However, CNNs have been most ...

The Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) AI learning-based image coding system is an ongoing joint standardization effort between International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and International Te ...

Optoacoustic (OA) imaging is based on optical excitation of biological tissues with nanosecond-duration laser pulses and detection of ultrasound (US) waves generated by thermoelastic expansion following light absorption. The image quality and fidelity of O ...

Melanomas are among the deadliest cancers, with a high predisposition to metastasis and a bad prognosis in their late stages. The effectiveness of current therapeutic regimens remains suboptimal, and despite initial successes, treatment resistance emerges ...

Recent advances in image compression have made it both possible and desirable for image quality to approach the visually lossless range. However, the most commonly used subjective visual quality assessment protocols, e.g. those reported in ITU-T Rec. BT.50 ...

This paper presents the experimental results from nine full-scale concrete-filled double-skin tubular (CFDST) beam-columns. The test specimens exploited two fabrication strategies, featuring either hollow steel inner skins with corrugated geometry or ultra ...

We propose a pre-training strategy called Multi-modal Multi-task Masked Autoencoders (MultiMAE). It differs from standard Masked Autoencoding in two key aspects: I) it can optionally accept additional modalities of information in the input besides the RGB ...

Attribute-based representations help machine learning models perform tasks based on human understandable concepts, allowing a closer human-machine collaboration. However, learning attributes that accurately reflect the content of an image is not always str ...

Noise is an intrinsic part of any sensor and is present, in various degrees, in any content that has been captured in real life environments. In imaging applications, several pre- and post-processing solutions have been proposed to cope with noise in captu ...

The COVID-19 pandemic outbreak is causing a dramatic worsening in the already complicated living conditions of blind and visually impaired individuals. Social distancing is the most effective strategy to limit virus spread, but is extremely difficult for b ...

Skin problems are often overlooked due to a lack of robust and patient-friendly monitoring tools. Herein, we report a rapid, noninvasive, and high-throughput analytical chemical methodology, aiming at real-time monitoring of skin conditions and early detec ...

The human skin is a unique organ that embeds multiple functions that no artificial systems can currently replicate. Advances in materials science and engineering are driving the design of electronic skins-large-area sensor arrays that mimic some sensory mo ...

The human face plays an essential role in social interactions as it brings information about someone's identity, state of mind, or mood. People are, by nature, very good at catching this non-spoken information. Therefore, scientists have been interested in ...

Understanding the external environment depends heavily on vision, audition, and touch. Like vision and audition, the human sense of touch is complex. Tactile perception is composed of multiple fundamental and physical experiences felt as changes in stiffne ...

Modern histopathology workflows rely on the digitization of histology slides. The quality of the resulting digital representations, in the form of histology slide image mosaics, depends on various specific acquisition conditions and on the image processing ...

In this work, we resolve a big challenge that most current image quality metrics (IQMs) are unavailable across different image contents, especially simultaneously coping with natural scene (NS) images or screen content (SC) images. By comparison with exist ...

The present invention describes an adhesive tape stripping transfer method for quick and non-invasive diagnosis of skin diseases by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry analysis. Cells from the epidermis layer of a suspicious skin area of a patient are collected us ...
