Dynamic stall on airfoils negatively impacts their aerodynamic performance and can lead to structural damage. Accurate prediction and modelling of the dynamic stall loads are crucial for a more robust design of wings and blades that operate under unsteady ...

The presence of aerodynamic vortices is widespread in nature. They can be found at small scales near the wing tip of flying insects or at bigger scale in the form of hurricanes, cyclones or even galaxies. They are identified as coherent regions of high vor ...

The nonlinear behavior of a rigid rotor supported by herringbone grooved journal gas bearings (HGJBs) was investigated in this study. The two-dimensional narrow groove theory (2D-NGT) was adopted to model the HGJBs. A set of integrated rotor-bearing state ...

The dynamic behavior of spiral-grooved gas bearing supported four degrees-of-freedom (DOF) rotors is investigated by means of linearized bearing force coefficients and full time-integrated transient analysis. The transient method consists of a state-space ...

A formal framework to characterize and control/optimize the flow past permeable membranes by means of a homogenization approach is proposed and applied to the wake flow past a permeable cylindrical shell. From a macroscopic viewpoint, a Navier-like effecti ...

Waste heat recovery (WHR) is expected to contribute to reducing CO2 emissions from trucks. Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) systems show the highest potential for this application, but still lack efficient small-scale expansion devices, in practice. A novel tur ...

The increasing population and the consequential demand for dwelling and recreation areas lead to more frequent conflicts between humans and natural hazards. In mountainous regions snow avalanches are, therefore, still a major threat to humans and infrastru ...

This paper presents measurements of the motion amplitudes from flexibly supported Herringbone Grooved Journal Bearing bushings. Measurements taken in four locations on the flexibly supported bearing bushing enable the distinction between the radial and the ...

This paper offers an extensive review of publications dealing with the modeling, the design and the experimental investigation of grooved dynamic gas lubricated bearings. Recent years have witnessed a rise in small-scale and high-speed turbomachinery appli ...

The web's local buckling is a major failure type of pultruded glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bridge deck subjected to concentrated wheel loads. Three kinds of external actions-that is, in-plane shear force, local compressive force and bending moment ...

Pressure is one of the constitutional quantities governing the flow field in gas lubricated bearings. Knowledge of the pressure is of principal importance in the fundamental understanding of such bearings and for the calibration of reduced order models. Th ...

Clean and energy-efficient turbomachinery are playing an increasingly important role in the decarbonization of heating systems, waste heat recovery and transportation, as the use of small-scale heat pumping and fuel cells spreads. Such machines typically e ...

Airfoil stall plays a central role in the design of safe and efficient lifting surfaces. We typically distinguish between static and dynamic stall based on the unsteady rate of change of an airfoil’s angle of attack. Despite the somewhat misleading denotat ...

We present results from a combined experimental and numerical investigation of the fluid-structure interaction of cantilevered porous flexible strips, towed through a fluid bath. We characterize the steady-state deformation of the strips and their associat ...

Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) are being used in a wide range of applications such as surveillance, reconnaissance, inspection, and search and rescue. However, due to their size and mission profiles, they are prone to tipping over, jeopardizing their operati ...

Foil bearings are strong candidates to support oil-free turbomachinery. Although foil bearings are a widely used technology, models describing their behavior are not validated using the film pressure, which is the fundamental variable of any fluid film bea ...

The segregation of large intruders in an agitated granular system is of high practical relevance, yet the accurate modeling of the segregation (lift) force is challenging as a general formulation of a granular equivalent of a buoyancy force remains elusive ...

This work presents a data-driven Reduced-Order Model (ROM) for parametric convective heat transfer problems in porous media. The intrusive Proper Orthogonal Decomposition aided Reduced-Basis (POD-RB) technique is employed to reduce the porous medium formul ...

The Narrow Groove Theory (NGT) is commonly used to simulate and design grooved gas bearing. However, measurements of dynamic force coefficients of Herringbone Grooved Journal Bearings (HGJBs) is missing, hence the validation historic NGT has never been per ...
