The local undercut defects at the weld toe provide a potential initiation site for fatigue cracks and significantly impact the structure's fatigue strength. The influence of continuous undercut depth on fatigue performance is widely studied, but the resear ...

This paper quantitatively studies the influence of fiber orientation on the high cycle tensile fatigue resistance of ultra-high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites (UHPFRC) within and beyond elastic domain. Eight tensile fatigue tests and ...

Ultra-high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composite (UHPFRC) is a modern class of cementitious building materials. Because of its superior mechanical properties and durability, it is increasingly used globally to rehabilitate, strengthen and mod ...

Modeling the 3D internal crack under compression entails complex fracture mechanics (mode I-II-III fracture), resulting in substantial computational costs and challenges in characterizing fracture morphology characterization for Phase Field Method (PFM) si ...

The two-dimensional (2D) delamination growth in composite laminates under the Mode-II fracture condition was experimentally investigated using a novel set-up. Circular plate specimens with a centrally embedded pre-crack of two sizes were semi-clamped along ...

This paper aims to propose a novel approach to assess the multi-crack behavior of layered fiber-polymer composites. The Compliance and R-curves generated from this novel approach were useful to understand the multiple delamination process, enabling to eval ...

Residual stresses in hot-rolled wide flange steel cross sections may lead to premature yielding, accelerated corrosion and brittle fracture of steel members. The above phenomena lead to a loss of a steel member's stiffness and resistance under mechanical l ...

The effect of fiber architecture, i.e., unidirectional (UD) vs. multi-directional (MD), on the tension-tension fa-tigue behavior of bolted double-lap basalt composite joints was experimentally investigated. The fatigue load-life (F -N) curves of MD and UD ...

In the evolution of structural glass beam elements, the requirements for post-fracture load bearing capacity and safe failure behaviour have led to the development of reinforced and post-tensioned beams. Maximum bending capacity in the post-fracture state ...

In this study, TC-PRISMA was employed to simulate the precipitation (number density and radius) of an FeMnSi-based shape memory alloy (FeMnSi-SMA), with a chemical composition of Fe-17Mn-5Si-10Cr-4Ni-1(V, C) (wt%), during one-step and two-step aging proces ...

The relevance of the phase-field approach to simulate the fracture in porous ceramics has been investigated. For this purpose, the conditions for the crack initiation using the phase-field model have been compared to the theoretical predictions of the coup ...

Existing shear-cracked structures need to be reliably verified in order to avoid redundant interventions. Code provisions often raise shear safety and/or fatigue life concerns of the reinforcement subjected to stress concentrations due to cyclic dowel acti ...

Laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF) is an additive manufacturing (AM) process that uses a laser to selectively melt a powder bed. This process can build dense samples with complicated geometries from a wide variety of metallic alloys. In this thesis, LPBF of al ...

The examination of bridges under service loading is key for understanding their condition and thus for their sustainable and efficient use. The need to extend the service duration of existing bridges is increasing, and therefore, efficient tools for examin ...

The objective of this thesis is to develop knowledge and methods to prevent fatigue failure of bridges. The Fatigue Limit State is investigated from both the demand (S) and resistance (R) side. The S-part focuses on reduction of uncertainties through monit ...

Fatigue is the most common cause of failure of mechanical parts in engineering applications. In the current work, we investigate the fatigue life of a bulk metallic (BMG) glass fabricated via additive manufacturing. Specimens fabricated via laser powder-be ...

Tensile test data for structural steels are ubiquitous. Yet, the information monotonic loading provides with respect to the material's characteristics is limited. Notably, features of inelastic response to cyclic loading, such as the Bauschinger eect, can ...

Dry-snow slab avalanches result from crack propagation in a highly porous weak layer buried within a stratified and metastable snowpack. While our understanding of slab avalanche mechanisms improved with recent experimental and numerical advances, fundamen ...

This paper introduces a new fatigue life prediction methodology for viscoelastic materials in the tension-tension fatigue loading region. The model was established based on the total amount of energy dissipated during fatigue loading, and offers two main a ...

Laser powder bed fusion is an additive manufacturing technique extensively used for the production of metallic components. Despite this process has reached a status at which parts are produced with mechanical properties comparable to those from conventiona ...
