The vibrational response of solid materials and structural components is substantially governed by their mechanical and geometrical properties. Low-frequency vibrations and modal frequencies are sensitive to global geometrical deviations, while high-freque ...

The motion of atoms is at the heart of any chemical or structural transformation in molecules and materials. Upon activation of this motion by an external source, several (usually many) vibrational modes can be coherently coupled, thus facilitating the che ...

In this work, we use periodic density functional theory(periodic DFT) to rigorously assign vibrational spectra measured on nanorough wet-processed hydrogenated Si(111) surfaces. We compare Si(111)-(1x1) surfaces etched by dilute HF and NH4F, featuring two ...

This thesis investigates novel single-molecule luminescence phenomena at their inherent, sub-molecular length scale. The microscopic understanding of luminescence processes will be crucial for the continued improvement of organic optoelectronic and semicon ...

Methylidyne, CH(ads), adsorbed on a Pt(211) surface and its interaction with chemisorbed hydrogen atoms was studied by reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS). Methylidyne was formed on Pt(211) by methane dissociation from a molecular beam foll ...

Optical frequency combs are a series of phase-locked and equidistant laser lines in the spectral domain. In the time domain, they correspond to periodic pulse trains by the Fourier relation. The ability to shape optical combs and pulse trains is pivotal to ...

Crystals and glasses exhibit fundamentally different heat conduction mechanisms: the periodicity of crystals allows for the excitation of propagating vibrational waves that carry heat, as first discussed by Peierls in 1929, while in glasses the lack of per ...

Two-dimensional Fourier transform spectroscopy is a promising technique to study ultrafast molecular dynamics. Similar to transient absorption spectroscopy, a more complete picture of the dynamics requires broadband laser pulses to observe transient change ...

This review is focused on the influence of lattice dynamics on the ionic mobility in superionic conductors in particular solid-state Li-ion conductors. After a succinct review of the static view of ionic conduction, the role of polarizability as the underl ...

Earth-abundant and low-cost semiconductors, such as zinc phosphide (Zn3P2), are promising candidates for the next generation photovoltaic applications. However, synthesis on commercially available substrates, which favors the formation of defects, and cont ...

The structures of interfaces of nano- and microscale objects in an aqueous solution are important for a wide variety of physical, chemical, and biological processes. Vibrational sum frequency (SF) scattering has emerged as a useful and unique probe of the ...

The mid-infrared spectrum can be recorded from almost any material, making mid-infrared spectroscopy an extremely important and widely used sample characterization and analysis technique. However, sensitive photoconductive detectors operate primarily in th ...

Occurrence of cavitation in hydraulic machines is a challenging issue because it is often accompanied with loss of efficiency, noise emissions, vibrations, and erosion damages. Tip vortices, in particular, are an ideal site for the development of cavitatio ...

At part load conditions, Francis turbines are subject to the emergence of a hydrodynamic instability in their draft tube, referred to as precessing vortex rope. It induces pressure pulsations in the water passages at the precession frequency of the vortex, ...

Donor-acceptor (D-A) extended copolymers have shown great potential to be exploited for intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) because of their modular tunability and intrinsic ability to incorporate low-lying charge-transfer (CT) and a triplet-pair (1TT) st ...

Radiative cooling of carbon cluster anions C(2n+1)(-)C2n+1- (n = 3-5) is investigated using the cryogenic electrostatic ion storage ring DESIREE. Two different strategies are applied to infer infrared emission on slow (milliseconds to seconds) and ultraslo ...

Vibration mode and resonance frequency of piezoelectric MEMS ultrasonic sensors was investigated on buckled diaphragm structures. The buckling of the diaphragms was introduced intrinsically through residual stress control of the piezoelectric film, and ext ...

A single quantum of excitation of a mechanical oscillator is a textbook example of the principles of quantum physics. But mechanical oscillators, despite their pervasive presence in nature and modem technology, do not genetically exist in an excited Fock s ...

Vibrational properties of molecular crystals are constantly used as structural fingerprints, in order to identify both the chemical nature and the structural arrangement of molecules. The simulation of these properties is typically very costly, especially ...

Although distributed fiber-optic sensing of axial strain and temperature is a well-established technique, there are almost no demonstrations of distributed hydrostatic pressure sensing. The main obstacle for such measurements is the low sensitivity to pres ...
