Micro and nanoparticles made from polymers, metals, ceramics, and lipids are crucial for biomedical devices, energy storage, and electronics. Traditional fabrication methods like grinding, milling, and emulsification result in monolithic shapes and heterog ...

A three-region optimal economic growth model is proposed to represent the global energy transition to net-zero emissions when carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies are available. The main features of the model are (i) the representation of the economy ...

Stand-alone carbon pricing is still predominantly advanced as the policy instrument of choice for abating greenhouse gas emissions, although it has enjoyed limited support in practice. Against this background, the current paper investigates whether combina ...

Grid regulation capacities of Pumped Storage Hydropower Plants (PSHPs) are of great importance for today’s and future power supply systems. In this context, variable speed technologies provide solutions for enhanced operational flexibility of PSHP units. E ...

The Plant Electrical System (PES) of the European DEMOnstration fusion power plant (DEMO), presently under conceptual design, shall supply power to the loads and deliver net power to the Power Transmission Grid (PTG). Starting from the available requiremen ...

Existing daylight standards encourage larger glazed areas, which often results in larger solar gains in the summer and heat losses in the winter. To avoid these, shadings, thicker frames and multiple panes of glass are required to respect operational energ ...

Building Replacement (BR), involving demolition and immediate reconstruction on the same site, is a key urban strategy with major environmental impacts, including waste generation, resource depletion, and increased embodied carbon emissions. Despite its im ...

In this study we present the role of the Planetary Boundary Layer Height (PBLH) on the air pollutant concentrations measured at an urban background station at the megacity of Athens, Greece, an area characterized by complex topography. For this purpose, we ...

This work proposes a method for optimal planning (sizing and siting) energy storage systems (ESSs) in power distribution grids while considering the option of curtailing photo-voltaic (PV) generation. More specifically, for a given PV generation capacity t ...

Due to the large waste of heat in the power and industrial sectors, our use of energy is inefficient. Moreover, it relies on rapidly depleting and greenhouse-gas-emitting sources such as fossil fuels. While the scarcity of energy resources is a relevant so ...

A compact operations research (OR) model is proposed to analyse the prospects of meeting the Paris Agreement targets when direct air capture technologies can be used or not. The main features of the model are (i) the representation of the economy and energ ...

The rapid growth of the electronics industry has brought about significant environmental challenges, including electronic waste and carbon emissions. To reduce the environmental impact, innovative sensing technologies are being explored. Laser-induced grap ...

Transition from fossils to renewables is leading to radical societal changes. Shifting the capital from fossils to renewables is commonly accompanied with political concerns, such as energy autonomy, domestic employment etc. Despite a decreasing trend in r ...

The presence of gas species other than the target adsorbate in practical conditions causes complications in implementing a sorption-based process because of synergistic or detrimental effects on the sorption mechanism. MgO-based sorbents have attracted mas ...

The concept of a multi-source inverter (MSI) based on NPC topology was recently introduced for hybrid-electric powertrains to connect several dc sources to the traction load in a single conversion stage without magnetics. This work proposes a new modulatio ...

The pursuit of alternative energy sources for the nitrogen fertilizers sector has recently earned renewed interest due to increasing concerns regarding the world dependence on non-renewable energy resources and also motivated by the more stringent environm ...

A tighter integration of modeling frameworks for climate and air quality is urgently needed to assess the impacts of clean air policies on future Arctic and global climate. We combined a new model emulator and comprehensive emissions scenarios for air poll ...

Geomechanics is advancing our understanding of the multi-physical processes encountered in engineering practices involving energy storage and production and environmental protection for which the characterization of the behavior of relevant materials is es ...

Direct air capture using solid adsorbents is a proven technology critical to reducing our net greenhouse gas emissions to zero and beyond. Currently, academic research into the technology mainly focuses on the devel-opment of new adsorbents. However, there ...

Mercury (Hg) is an environmental toxicant dangerous to human health and the environment. Its anthropogenic emissions are regulated by global, regional, and local policies. Here, we investigate Hg sources in the coastal city of Boston, the third largest met ...
