The engineering of aluminum nitride (AlN) waveguides allows for broad supercontinuum generation (SCG) within its wide transparency window (200 nm - 5.5 μm) enabling applications in precision spectroscopy and metrology fields. An efficient coverage from 500 to 3500 nm was shown by pumping crystalline AlN waveguides with a femtosecond laser centered at 1560 nm [1]. UV and visible coverage was reached by pumping around 800 nm and by chirping the waveguide [2] or by exploiting the modal dispersion of higher-ord

Multiscale modeling is the branch of computational mechanics that has suffered from the limits imposed by computational costs probably the most, owing to computations being performed on more than one scale. Consequently, the use of machine learning (ML) methods to bypass costly lower-scale or scale-bridging simulations has tremendous potential to accelerate multiscale modeling and provide new opportunities for simulating the complex mechanics of materials and structures. We will discuss a few recent applica

Albeit the speed and energy advantages offered by silicon (Si) and silicon nitride (SiN) photonics, a single material platform, with varying intrinsic limitations, can hardly meet the ever-diversifying requirements posed for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). The heterogeneous integration of functional materials to established photonic platforms has thus gained tremendous momentum, underpinning various high-performance optoelectronic applications. However, stringent lattice-matching constraints severely h

The growing demand for high-speed, miniaturized, and energy-efficient information technologies has intensified interest in beyond-CMOS paradigms such as magnonics and spintronics. In particular, spin waves, which are collective excitations of magnetization, offer a charge-free medium for GHz-frequency signal transmission and processing. Three-dimensional (3D) magnetic architectures offer unique opportunities to explore new physical phenomena, enable novel functionalities, and enhance integration density in

Integrated photonic waveguides serve as an ideal platform for nonlinear processes at high efficiency in a very compact footprint. Key to the design of such structures is the ability to precisely engineer waveguide dispersion properties. However, especially for novel materials, the unavailability in bulk dispersion data and fabrication inconsistencies often compromise numerical models, rendering waveguide design a challenge. To bridge this gap, we propose a technique based on white light interferometry that

Recent advances in the field of metamaterials have shown that waves can be efficiently manipulated at the subwavelength scale through the interactions with an ensemble of resonant inclusions, opening new horizons in overcoming the size limits of devices which are often tied to the wavelength of operation [1]. Such size limit is crucial for many applications where the overall dimensions are required to be as small as possible, for instance cost-efficient devices for satellite communications. Unfortunately, the

The recent introduction of acoustic metamaterials and metasurfaces in the literature has triggered an tremendous interest in the scientific community, with their capability to achieve extraordinary acoustic properties for various acoustic and noise control applications, although limited frequency-wise. Coupled with active acoustic control concept, a step towards broadband extraordinary properties has been unveiled. We present the design of an active acoustic metasurface concept allowing steering reflected w

We propose and study an integrated refractive index sensor which is based on a plasmonic slot cavity integrated on silicon-on-insulator wafers. In this device, the guided mode isvertically coupled to the cavity which is a metal-dielectric-metal waveguide and is separated from a photonic wire waveguide by a silicon dioxide spacer. We perform an in-depth study that links the geometrical parameters to the coupling and sensitivity. The strong coupling from the dielectric waveguide to the plasmonic slot waveguid

In this work, we design, fabricate and experimentally characterize a surface structured lens within an ultra thin polymer layer deposited on a Bloch Surface Waves (BSWs) suspended dielectric platform. The near-field (SNOM) measurements demonstrate that the lens is able to manipulate the propagation of the surface waves. Experimental result shows good agreement with the simulation calculated using the finite difference time-domain (FDTD). This work opens a way to realize surface structured integrated all-opt

A plasmonic slot waveguide excited by evanescent wave coupling of a silicon strip waveguide is studied to be used as a label-free biosensor. The plasmonic slot waveguide enables strong electric-field enhancement in a small volume inducing higher interaction between the light and the analyte.

A germanium strip waveguide on a silicon substrate is integrated with a microfluidic chip to detect cocaine in tetrachloroethylene solutions. In the evanescent field of the waveguide, cocaine absorbs the light at 5.8μm, which is emitted from a quantum cascade laser. The lowest measured concentration is 100μg/ml.

The study of the optoelectronic effects of plasmonic metal nanoparticles on semiconductors has led to compelling evidence for plasmon-enhanced water splitting. We review the relevant physics, device geometries, and research progress in this area. We focus on localized surface plasmons and their effects on semiconductors, particularly in terms of energy transfer, scattering, and hot electron transfer.

Strontium barium niobate thin films have been deposited by pulsed laser deposition on (111)-textured Pt films, p-doped Si(I 00) and Nb doped STO (SrTiO3) single crystals. The deposition parameters were optimized for obtaining phase pure (001)-oriented films from stochiometric targets. The samples were annealed in oxygen to improve top electrode adhesion and reduce oxygen vacancies. The SBN/substrate interfaces were investigated by means of TEM combined with EDAX chemical analysis. Growth on silicon resulted

An over-moded evacuated waveguide line was chosen for use in the transmission system for the proposed JET enhanced performance project (JET-EP) electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) system. A comparison between the quasi-optical, atmospheric waveguide and evacuated waveguide systems was performed for the project with a strong emphasis placed on the technical and financial aspects. The evacuated waveguide line was chosen as the optimal system in light of the above criteria. The system includes six line

Using a fully vectorial three-dimensional numerical approach (generalized field propagator, based on Green's tensor technique), we investigate the near-field images produced by subwavelength objects buried in a dielectric surface. We study the influence of the object index, size, and depth on the near field. We emphasize the similarity between the near field spawned by an object buried in the surface (dielectric contrast) and that spawned by a protrusion on the surface (topographic contrast). We show that a

We show that dielectric objects much smaller than the wavelength used to illuminate them, can produce a confined electric field that perfectly reproduces their shape. This field can be recorded by a scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM), which explains how these devices reach a resolution far beyond the diffraction limit.
