To address the rising demand for plastics, it is essential to create new types of polymers that are both highly recyclable and emit minimal amounts of greenhouse gases. These plastics should be derived from readily available, renewable feedstocks. Such eff ...

Concerns over the sustainability and end-of-life properties of fossil-derived surfactants have driven interest in bio-based alternatives. Lignocellulosic biomass with its polar functional groups is an obvious feedstock for surfactant production but its use ...

Transition from fossils to renewables is leading to radical societal changes. Shifting the capital from fossils to renewables is commonly accompanied with political concerns, such as energy autonomy, domestic employment etc. Despite a decreasing trend in r ...

We present an application of the operational monitoring tool SIPRIUS+ to an ongoing case study representative of urban brownfield regeneration projects: the Pôle Viotte neighbourhood, located in Besançon (France). We start with a description of the brownfi ...

This work develops new algorithms with rigorous efficiency guarantees for infinite horizon imitation learning (IL) with linear function approximation without restrictive coherence assumptions. We begin with the minimax formulation of the problem and then o ...

The increasing demand for heat, electricity, fuels and chemicals is pushing natural resources towards a non-reversible situation. Current solutions have to be adapted, and alternative (desirably sustainable) sources have to be found. With growth assured du ...

The application of practice theories in the domain of sustainability research in consumer studies is increasingly advocated based on the premise that this allows to analyse consumption as a social phenomenon. Consequently, the applications of social practi ...

Housing plays a crucial role in the transition towards sustainability. Zero-energy or low-carbon housing solutions are key, but their success depends on their acceptance by the users. We propose a conceptual and an operational framework for understanding h ...

The survival of the sugar industry in South Africa is under threat due to an unstable and low sugar price, high production cost and old infrastructure. At present, coal and sugarcane bagasse are used as fuels in an inefficient boiler to generate the heat a ...

This work develops an effective distributed algorithm for the solution of stochastic optimization problems that involve partial coupling among both local constraints and local cost functions. While the collection of networked agents is interested in discov ...

A transition towards a circular economy of phosphorus (P) in Switzerland is a multi-faceted challenge as P use is subject to a variety of influencing factors comprising policy interventions, consumption trends, or technological innovations on different spa ...

The need for adequate instruments to support practitioners toward achieving sustainable and energy-efficient architectural and urban design has long been acknowledged. Motivated by identified shortcomings of building performance assessment tools for concep ...

This work develops a fully decentralized variance-reduced learning algorithm for multi-agent networks where nodes store and process the data locally and are only allowed to communicate with their immediate neighbors. In the proposed algorithm, there is no ...

Introduction In 1987, the need to strive towards development aimed at making it possible to satisfy the present needs without compromising the needs of future generations is generally acknowledged. The Rio Earth Summit in 1992 propagated Agenda 211, whi ...

The present study evaluates the use of supercritical fluid technology, particularly supercritical water gasification (SCWG), to add value to residues from a sugarcane biorefinery that produces first and second generation ethanol. This case study aims at el ...

Regeneration of disused urban areas, such as industrial brownfields or abandoned infrastructural zones, has received considerable attention in the context of post‐industrial European cities. Due to the inherent complexity of these projects, a holistic inte ...

In the context of sustainable densification of post-industrial European cities, urban wasteland regeneration projects offer an important potential of surfaces to recapture. Indeed, these projects can contribute concurrently to densify and revitalize existi ...

Synthetic fuels, or synfuels, can be produced from gas, coal and biomass. The conversion of gas and coal is well established but lignocellulosic biomass conversion is slow to develop. This paper addresses the issue of the production cost of second generati ...

A good measurement system improves capability to identify the behavior of civil engineering structures. This paper presents a measurement-system design approach for continuous monitoring of structures. This approach performs two tasks: (1) determining the ...
