Micro and nanoparticles made from polymers, metals, ceramics, and lipids are crucial for biomedical devices, energy storage, and electronics. Traditional fabrication methods like grinding, milling, and emulsification result in monolithic shapes and heterog ...

Shales are extensively studied for their roles in various geosystems, including radioactive waste disposal, CO2 sequestration, underground hydrogen storage, and oil and gas extraction. In radioactive waste repositories, gas generation, arising from corrosi ...

Grid regulation capacities of Pumped Storage Hydropower Plants (PSHPs) are of great importance for today’s and future power supply systems. In this context, variable speed technologies provide solutions for enhanced operational flexibility of PSHP units. E ...

Radiant floor heating is widely recognized for its low-energy consumption and high efficiency. Traditional systems, however, typically heat the entire floor area within a space, conditioning spaces uniformly regardless of occupancy. This study investigates ...

Stand-alone carbon pricing is still predominantly advanced as the policy instrument of choice for abating greenhouse gas emissions, although it has enjoyed limited support in practice. Against this background, the current paper investigates whether combina ...

The transition towards clean renewable energy sources, where wind and solar are prone to variation, requires adequate energy storage. Power-to-methane (PtM) systems can be part of the solution. Specifically, solid-oxide-electrolyser (SOE) based PtM systems ...

Water can be vitrified if it is cooled at high rates, which makes it possible to outrun crystallization in so-called no man’s land, a range of deeply supercooled temperatures where water crystallizes rapidly. Here, we study the reverse process in pure wate ...

Energy piles represent an innovative technology that can help provide sustainable geothermal heating or cooling energy for thermal conditioning purposes. In hot-dominated climates, the interest is to inject heat in the ground and extract energy for space-c ...

Buildings play a pivotal role in the ongoing worldwide energy transition, accounting for 30% of the global energy consumption. With traditional engineering solutions reaching their limits to tackle such large-scale problems, data-driven methods and Machine ...

The European Union's Green Deal aims for a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. To reach this goal, a massive integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) into the power grid is necessary. As RES become a large part of the electricity genera ...

Healthcare sector buildings, particularly hospitals, significantly contribute to global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Hospitals require a substantial amount of steam, including the essential hygienic or " clean steam, " that is currently ...

The shift towards DC power distribution networks, enabled by power electronics technologies, is changing the nature of electrical power systems. Nowadays, DC power distribution networks can effectively support the high penetration of distributed energy res ...

The aluminium sector relies on natural gas for the conversion of recycled scrap into new feedstock, which results in substantial atmospheric emissions. Hydric resources are also impacted, as they serve as heat sinks for the waste heat generated during the ...

Machine learning algorithms such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are characterized by high robustness towards quantization, supporting small-bitwidth fixed-point arithmetic at inference time with little to no degradation in accuracy. In turn, small ...

In this paper, we propose an analytical stochastic dynamic programming (SDP) algorithm to address the optimal management problem of price-maker community energy storage. As a price-maker, energy storage smooths price differences, thus decreasing energy arb ...

The Plant Electrical System (PES) of the European DEMOnstration fusion power plant (DEMO), presently under conceptual design, shall supply power to the loads and deliver net power to the Power Transmission Grid (PTG). Starting from the available requiremen ...

In ferroelectric switching, an applied electric field switches the system between two polar symmetry-equivalent states. In this work, we use first-principles calculations to explore the polar states of hydrogen-doped samarium nickelate (SNO) at a concentra ...

Photo-electrochemical (PEC) devices allow for converting solar energy into chemical energy and for the production of energetically dense solar fuels. Light absorption, charge separation and transport, electrochemical reactions, and ionic transport are requ ...

The scientific progress is significantly transforming contemporary society with the introduction and widespread application of technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing. Despite their profound impact, these technologies necessitate en ...

The thesis explores the issue of fairness in the real-time (RT) control of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) hosted in active distribution networks (ADNs) in the presence of uncertainties by proposing and experimentally validating appropriate control ...
