Microcapsules are often used as individually dispersed carriers of active ingredients to prolong their shelf life or to protect premature reactions with substances contained in the surrounding. This study goes beyond this application and employs microcapsu ...

We review the known construction of the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) on the two-sphere. Next we describe the construction of a CWT on the upper sheet of a two- sheeted hyperboloid, emphasizing the similarities between the two cases. Finally we give s ...

Rate and diversity impose a fundamental trade-off in wireless communication. High-rate space-time codes come at a cost of lower reliability (diversity), and high reliability (diversity) implies a lower rate. However, wireless networks need to support appli ...

From airplanes to sailboats to bridges, composite materials have become a significant part of our everyday structures. With increasing demand, these materials are pushed to their limits to improve structural efficiency. As a consequence, research and devel ...

Particle reinforced metal matrix composites are manufactured by high-pressure infiltration. These composites contain roughly 50% by volume of discrete alumina inclusions dispersed homogeneously in a continuous aluminium-based matrix. Three matrices, namely ...

Reinforced concrete bridge deck slabs without shear reinforcement can be subjected to concentrated or distributed loads of important magnitude. Under these loads their structural response is not always ductile. In particular under concentrated loads their ...

We review the construction of the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) on the two-sphere by two methods, the group-theoretical approach and the geometrical method based on conformal invariance. Then we discuss the discretization of the spherical CWT, obtaini ...

The Direct Metal Laser Sintering process (DMLS) is a Rapid Manufacturing (RM) technique. A 3D object is built layer by layer through laser consolidation of metallic powders. Several industrial DMLS stations are commercialised. The current performances of t ...

In the context of sustainable development, building insulation represents a major concern as a means of increasing energy efficiency. In order to comply with new norms such as the Passive House standard, locations where load-bearing components must penetra ...

Porous coating for the controlled release of drugs, said coating comprising a porous structure with pores adapted to act as reservoirs or as passages for a drug, in such a way that said drug can move from the external environment to/from or through said po ...

Mechanical and fracture behaviors of wood are defined by the morphology and mechanical properties of wood fibers and their bonding medium. Parallel orientation of wood fibers makes them the most influential microstructural elements from the mechanical poin ...

For centuries, the use of glass in buildings was essentially restricted to functions such as windows and glazing. Over the last decades, continuous improvements in production and refining technologies have enabled glass elements to carry more substantial s ...

Two forms of carbon fibre reinforced polyamide 12 (PA12) were compared during non-isothermal stamp forming. The first was a stretch broken commingled yarn woven into a fabric, studied at three initial preconsolidation levels. The second was produced by in ...

Thin brittle films on polymer substrates are finding increasing use as gas barriers for example in the medical and food packaging industries and also for the next generation of ultra-light displays based on flexible polymer substrates. In order to determin ...

The design of reinforced and prestressed concrete girders is usually performed so as to avoid any non ductile failure mode. Amongst these failure modes, one of the most undesirable occurs by crushing of concrete in the web. To avoid this brittle type of fa ...

The evolution of microstructural damage during tensile deformation of pure aluminium reinforced with 10 vol.% alumina short fibres is studied by monitoring the evolution of density and Young's modulus as a function of tensile strain. It is found that Young ...

During reheating and post-processing of thermoplastic-based composites, deconsolidation is often observed: the volume fraction fibre decreases and the void content increases. In this article, the phenomena leading to deconsolidation are investigated, with ...

A computational analysis of the longitudinal deformation of continuous fibre reinforced metals is presented. Elastic and elastic-plastic matrix behaviour are considered. Analytical approaches are confronted with finite element analyses (FEA) for varying fi ...

A study of the microstructure developing at the surface of glass fibers in a poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc)/polyester blend is presented. Three different experimental methods are used: a technique based on the Wilhelmy method to measure the wettability of the ...

Voids are often present in composite materials and have, as may be expected, negative effects on the mechanical properties. As a consequence, it is regarded to be important to optimise manufacturing techniques of composite materials towards minimum void co ...
