Cementitious materials show anomalous behaviour during capillary imbibition: a lack of linearity of the mass gain versus the square root of time. This is considered to be caused by the water retention in the calcium silicate (C-S-H) structure (and conseque ...

Titanium-based Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) offer remarkable mechanical, thermal, and corrosion resistance properties and are of high interest to several industrial sectors, including aerospace. One of the main commercial drawbacks of these materials, wh ...

Transparent electrodes with high conductivity and mechanical robustness are essential for flexible opto-electronic applications. Indium tin oxide (ITO) single layers have long been considered as unsuitable for flexible applications due to their brittleness ...

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are novel mixtures that exhibit a significant depression in melting points compared to their individual components. This work finds that combining tetrabutylammonium borohydride (TBABH) with ammonia borane (AB) yields new, sta ...

Iron-based shape memory alloys (Fe-SMAs) are e-merging materials with extensive application in civil structures owing to their unique properties, including the shape memory effect. However, it is crucial to understand the time dependent behavior of Fe-SMAs ...

This work introduces a new methodology to predict the fatigue life of viscoelastic materials by considering the creep effect on fatigue behavior under the concurrent effects of stress level, stress ratio, and temperature. The model established based on the ...

This study investigates the microstructure and properties of functionally graded NiTi alloy bilayers. The NiTi layer is printed by laser powder bed fusion on a NiTiX (where X is Hf or Cu) substrate prepared by vacuum arc remelting. Specimens produced with ...

Elastic gridshells are a class of planar-to-3D linkages typically composed of straight flexible beams connected via rigid rotational joints. The integration of planar curved flexible beams into these linkages significantly broadens their design space, allo ...

This study focuses on investigating Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring in the Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) process, using premixed Ti6Al4V-(x wt%) Fe, where x = 0, 3, and 6. By employing a structure-borne AE sensor, we analyze AE data statistically, uncov ...

Suspended epitaxial gallium nitride (GaN) on silicon (Si) photonic crystal devices suffer from large residual tensile strain, especially for long waveguides, because fine structures tend to crack due to large stress. By introducing spring-like tethers, des ...

Interface stress is a fundamental descriptor for interphase boundaries and is defined in strict relation to the interface energy. In nanomultilayers with their intrinsically high interface density, the functional properties are dictated by the interface st ...

Fiber-polymer composites consist of a polymer matrix and reinforcing fibers made of various materials. These composites exhibit exceptional properties, such as a high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent corrosion resistance, which has led to their incre ...

Earthquakes i.e. frictional ruptures, are commonly described by singular solutions of shear crack motions. These solutions assume a square root singularity order around the rupture tip and a constant shear stress value behind it, implying scale-independent ...

Martensitic crystallography plays a vital role in the texture evolution and mechanical properties in Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) shape memory alloys when subjected to deformation. However, their microstructural changes during deformation are not well known and ...

Titanium has become in recent years an interesting material in many applications that require a combination of high mechanical properties and low density. It has the peculiarity of undergoing an allotropic transformation at 882°C. Below this temperature, ...

This data package supports the publication 'Complexity of crack front geometry enhances toughness of brittle solids' by Xinyue Wei, Chenzhuo Li, Cían McCarthy, and John M. Kolinski Nature physics (2024) - https://doi.org/10.1038/s41567-024-02435-x DOI: 1 ...

The stress state is an important parameter in terms of both earthquake nucleation and rupture. Here, a new stimulation technique is proposed for Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGSs), which have previously been burdened with a number of high-profile incidence ...

Ultra-high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composite (UHPFRC) is a modern class of cementitious building materials. Because of its superior mechanical properties and durability, it is increasingly used globally to rehabilitate, strengthen and mod ...

We investigate the fluid-driven growth of a shear crack along a frictional discontinuity and its transition to hydraulic fracturing (sometimes referred to as hydraulic jacking) under plane-strain conditions. We focus on the case of a constant friction coef ...

The microstructure evolution associated with the cold forming sequence of an Fe-14Cr-1W-0.3Ti-0.3Y2O3 grade ferritic stainless steel strengthened by dispersion of nano oxides (ODS) was investigated. The material, initially hot extruded at 1100 degrees C an ...
