The emergence of the blockchain technology has enabled innovations such as cryptocurrencies and decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, raising new opportunities and challenges for investors. This thesis contributes to the understanding of these emergin ...

Smart contracts have emerged as the most promising foundations for applications of the blockchain technology. Even though smart contracts are expected to serve as the backbone of the next-generation web, they have several limitations that hinder their wide ...

Enterprises collect data in large volumes and leverage them to drive numerous concurrent decisions and business processes. Their teams deploy multiple applications that often operate concurrently on the same data and infrastructure but have widely differen ...

In recent years, the concept of the metaverse has evolved significantly, with the aim of defining richer immersive and interactive environments that can support various types of virtual experiences and interactions among users. This evolution has given ris ...

Classic synchronous consensus algorithms are leaderless in that processes exchange proposals, choose the maximum value and decide when they see the same choice across a couple of rounds. Indulgent consensus algorithms are typically leader-based. Although t ...

Most modern in-memory online transaction processing (OLTP) engines rely on multi-version concurrency control (MVCC) to provide data consistency guarantees in the presence of conflicting data accesses. MVCC improves concurrency by generating a new version o ...

With the recent advent of blockchains, we have witnessed a plethora of blockchain proposals. These proposals range from using work to using time, storage or stake in order to select blocks to be appended to the chain. As a drawback it makes it difficult fo ...

Web3 is the next generation of the internet, often referred to as the decentralized or blockchain web. It aims to address the shortcomings of the current centralized web, such as privacy concerns and lack of control over personal data, by leveraging decent ...

In this article, we study the problem of Byzantine fault-tolerance in a federated optimization setting, where there is a group of agents communicating with a centralized coordinator. We allow up to

Advances in mobile computing have paved the way for new types of distributed applications that can be executed solely by mobile devices on Device-to-Device (D2D) ecosystems (e.g., crowdsensing). Sophisticated applications, like cryptocurrencies, need distr ...

The aim of this paper is to serve as a lightweight introduction to concurrency control for database theorists through a uniform presentation of the work on robustness against Multiversion Read Committed and Snapshot Isolation. ...

Classical synchronous consensus algorithms are leaderless: processes exchange their proposals, retain the maximum value and decide when they see the same choice across a couple of rounds. Indulgent consensus algorithms are more robust in that they only req ...

Distributed ledgers provide high availability and integrity, making them a key enabler for practical and secure computation of distributed workloads among mutually distrustful parties. Many practical applications also require strong confidentiality, howeve ...

As the volume of produced data is exponentially increasing, companies tend to rely on distributed systems to meet the surging demand for storage capacity. With the business workflows becoming more and more complex, such systems often consist of or are acce ...

In this thesis, we revisit classic problems in shared-memory distributed computing through the lenses of (1) emerging hardware technologies and (2) changing requirements. Our contributions consist, on the one hand, in providing a better understanding of th ...

In order to get a better understanding of the interaction of plasma microinstabilities and associated turbulence with specific modes, an antenna is implemented in the global gyrokinetic Particle-In-Cell (PIC) code ORB5. It consists in applying an external ...

Online services are becoming more and more ubiquitous and keep growing in scale. At the same time, they are required to be highly available, secure, energy-efficient, and to achieve high performance. To ensure these (and many other) properties, replication ...

While pump-and-dump schemes have attracted the attention of cryptocurrency observers and regulators alike, this paper represents the first detailed empirical query of pump-and-dump activities in cryptocurrency markets. We present a case study of a recent p ...

We introduce a new distributed computing model called m&m that allows processes to both pass messages and share memory. Motivated by recent hardware trends, we find that this model improves the power of the pure message-passing and shared-memory models. As ...

Designing a secure permissionless distributed ledger (blockchain) that performs on par with centralized payment processors, such as Visa, is a challenging task. Most existing distributed ledgers are unable to scale-out, i.e., to grow their total processing ...
