Metastable-state photoacids (mPAHs) are chemical species whose photo-activated state is long-lived enough to allow for proton diffusion. Liao's photoacid (1) represents the archetype of mPAHs, and is being widely used on account of its unique capability to ...

We develop a membrane technology based on amyloid fibrils to remove aluminium from water and minimize its exposure to humans. We study aluminium adsorption by amyloid fibrils by evaluating the binding isotherms, the thermodynamics and the effects of differ ...

In this paper, we exploit a large suite of ENZO cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical simulations adopting uniform mesh resolution, to investigate the properties of cosmic filaments under different baryonic physics and magnetogenesis scenarios. We exploit an ...

Renewables challenge the management of energy supply and demand due to their intermittency. A promising solution is the direct conversion of the excess electrical energy into valuable chemicals in electrochemical reactors that are inexpensive, scalable, an ...

Nanoparticles (NPs) have sizes that approach those of pathogens and they can interact with the membranes of eukaryotic cells in an analogous fashion. Typically, NPs are taken up by the cell via the plasma membrane by receptor-mediated processes and subsequ ...

Water activity and related thermodynamic properties are calculated for several aqueous solutions using equilibrium molecular dynamics in conjunction with the recent extension of the Kirkwood-Buff (KB) theory for closed systems. The general applicability of ...

Water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) is a ubiquitous and significant fraction of fine particulate matter. Despite advances in aerosol thermodynamic equilibrium models, there is limited understanding on the comprehensive impacts of WSOC on aerosol acidity (p ...

Three quarters of the thesis will be devoted to the discussion of non equilibrium systems. We show how certain biological systems cannot be described by standard thermodynamics. The reason is that the energy consumption due to the hydrolysis of ATP imposes ...

Our current energy production is convenient and simple, but it is not sustainable. The negative impacts on our environment are omnipresent in the form of smog, extinction of species, and global warming. A major challenge of our generation is the transition ...

The central objective of this work is to revisit the development of the widely used Lewis acidity/basicity scales and seek possibilities for their eventual unification. The primary focus is on hydrogen bonding interactions which are dealt with the estimati ...

The neoclassical tearing modes (NTM) increase the effective heat and particle radial transport inside the plasma, leading to a flattening of the electron and ion temperature and density profiles at a given location depending on the safety factor q rational ...

The present work is part of a series of papers aiming at a thorough understanding of the thermodynamics of metabolism over a broad range of external conditions. The focus here is on the systematic study of solvation/hydration of a variety of fluids via an ...
