The depletion of fossil fuel sources has encouraged the authorities to use renewable resources such as wind energy to generate electricity. A backup/storage system can improve the performance of wind turbines, due to fluctuations in power demand. The novel ...

This work proposes a method for optimal planning (sizing and siting) energy storage systems (ESSs) in power distribution grids while considering the option of curtailing photo-voltaic (PV) generation. More specifically, for a given PV generation capacity t ...

Smart home appliances can time-shift and curtail their power demand to assist demand side management or allow operation with limited power, as in an off-grid application. This letter proposes a scheduling process to start appliances with time-varying deter ...

This article shows that the inability to use monetary policy for macroeconomic stabilization leaves a government more vulnerable to a rollover crisis. We study a sovereign default model with self-fulfilling rollover crises, foreign currency debt, and nomin ...

Electricity markets are currently experiencing a period of rapid change. The intermittent nature of renewable energy is disrupting the conventional methods used in operational planning of the electrical grid, causing a shift from a day-ahead forecast polic ...

The last few years have experienced the emergence of Industry 4.0 (I4.0), ultra-customization, and the explosion of demand for ethical, fair trade, and sustainable consumption. Organizations have therefore started a digital transformation of their SCs and ...

With increasing modulation order, a larger number of parallel source-series-terminated (SST) segments are required to implement precise feedforward equalization (FFE) tap-weight control in SST transmitters (TX). Due to the data routing complexity of the se ...

In many transportation systems, a mismatch between the associated design and planning decisions and the demand is typically encountered. A tailored system is not only appealing to operators, which could have a better knowledge of their operational costs, b ...

The planning of national power systems is traditionally based on long-term forecasts of electricity demand and fuel prices. However, over such long time horizons (20-50 years), these forecasts often prove to be inaccurate. As an example, wrong projections ...

Recognized as a powerful methodology for the evaluation of environmental burdens, life cycle assessment (LCA) must be performed with close-to-reality inputs to be robust and accurate. However, the necessary real-world data is hardly available at the design ...

Buses operating in mixed traffic experience problems with delay and travel time variability in peak periods. Numerous transit priority measures are found in the literature but most rely on separating buses from other vehicles. Complete separation such as d ...

Within the context of market globalisation, the quality of products has become a key factor for success in manufacturing industry. The growing unpredictability of demand necessitates continuous adjustments in production targets. Addressing customer needs a ...

This study evaluates the potential of supervised and transfer learning techniques to assist energy system optimization. A surrogate model is developed with the support of a supervised learning technique (by using artificial neural network) in order to bypa ...

Because of the global warming, urban planning strategies must be investigated to reduce the building energy consumption and increase the thermal comfort in cities. In the framework of Energy Strategy 2050 of Switzerland, this research aim to highlight the ...

The stringent requirement of the demand-supply equilibrium for delivering electricity has traditionally been dealt with a supply-side perspective, assuming that the demand is not alterable. With the promises of the Smart Grid, demand- side management techn ...

A paradigm change in energy system design tools, energy market, and energy policy is required to attain the target levels in renewable energy integration and in minimizing pollutant emissions in power generation. Integrating non-dispatchable renewable ener ...

The world economy is undergoing dramatic changes, largely driven by the new availability of fine-grained information. Innovative ways of using datalarge and small-have also prompted a rethinking of the boundaries for the combination and use of knowledge. T ...

Different than the conventional queueing systems, in spatial queueing systems (SQS) the service rate for each customer-server pairs differs and the server that intervenes for a specific customer is not known a priori, depending on the availability of serve ...

Global warming is expected to lower the energy demand for heating, which would contribute to a decline in CO2 emissions. This effect may be offset by energy needs for additional cooling and by the impacts of households that reinvest the money they save on ...
