Photodynamic therapy of early squamous cell cancers of the esophagus

Résumé

The conventional treatment for the cure of esophageal cancer is surgical resection. Esophageal cancer, when detected at an early stage, has a very good probability of being eradicated by less aggressive procedures, and photodynamic therapy has proven to be a safe and effective treatment modality in some carefully selected patients. The indications, outcomes, and future considerations regarding the use of photodynamic therapy for the treatment of superficial squamous cell carcinomas of the esophagus are discussed in this article.

Cancer de l'œsophage

Le cancer de l'œsophage est un cancer se développant dans la muqueuse de l'œsophage. Le type le plus fréquent est le carcinome épidermoïde de l'œsophage, souvent associé à une intoxication alcoolo-tabagique et/ou au fait de boire des boissons trop chaudes. Le deuxième type en fréquence est l'adénocarcinome. En 2016 il a peu de thérapies ciblées et le pronostic est mauvais. On distinguait 2 types de cancer (carcinomes épidermoïdes œsophagien, et adénocarcinomes œsophagiens, les premiers évoquant plus des carcinomes squameux d'autres organes que les adénocarcinomes œsophagiens).

Secondary treatment

Secondary treatment (mostly biological wastewater treatment) is the removal of biodegradable organic matter (in solution or suspension) from sewage or similar kinds of wastewater. The aim is to achieve a certain degree of effluent quality in a sewage treatment plant suitable for the intended disposal or reuse option. A "primary treatment" step often precedes secondary treatment, whereby physical phase separation is used to remove settleable solids.

Water treatment

Water treatment is any process that improves the quality of water to make it appropriate for a specific end-use. The end use may be drinking, industrial water supply, irrigation, river flow maintenance, water recreation or many other uses, including being safely returned to the environment. Water treatment removes contaminants and undesirable components, or reduces their concentration so that the water becomes fit for its desired end-use. This treatment is crucial to human health and allows humans to benefit from both drinking and irrigation use.
