Clean water is essential for human survival, but access to safe drinking water remains a challenge in resource -limited regions. Herein, we explored a low-cost but effective solution for water potabilization using natural iron sources from soils along with ...

Water contamination due to environmental conditions and poor waste management in certain areas of the world represents a serious problem in accessing clean and safe drinking water. This problem is especially critical in electricity-poor regions, where adva ...

Disinfection agents have been present in our daily lives for several decades in detergents or in personal care products, where their role is to prevent the spread of pathogenic microor-ganisms. One of the largest class of disinfection agents is quaternary ...

Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae is a critical priority pathogen according to the World Health Organization's classification. Effluents of municipal wastewater treatment plants (EWWTP) may be a route for K. pneumoniae dissemination. Herein, the i ...

Quantitative PCR (qPCR) is a convenient tool for monitoring virus concentrations in water and wastewater treatment trains, though it only informs about virus presence, but not infectivity. This limitation can be overcome if the relationship between infecti ...

A source-to-tap evaluation of the origin and fate of chloramination N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) precursors at 21 full-scale drinking water plants was conducted. Upstream wastewater discharges accounted for (on a median basis) similar to 16 ng L-1 NDMA fo ...

The sector of transportation accounts for about one third of the total energy consumption in Switzerland. A monitoring campaign of the energy consumption of a regional train revealed the critical energy-consuming systems. Heating, cooling and ventilation w ...

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is commonly used as an alternative disinfectant to chlorine in drinking water treatment because it produces limited concentrations of halogenated organic disinfection byproducts. During drinking water treatment, the primary ClO2 byp ...

Renewable resources of energy are increasing their share in our energy portfolio thanks to the technological advancements and an increasing environmental awareness in society. Although the cost of power generation from these resources has been reduced to r ...

In this work, disinfection by 5 Advanced Oxidation Processes was preceded by 3 different secondary treatment systems present in the wastewater treatment plant of Vidy, Lausanne (Switzerland). 5 AOPs after two biological treatment methods (conventional acti ...

This study addresses the bacterial inactivation mechanism by photo-Fenton process at near-neutral pH, focusing on iron-oxides and iron-citrate as photocatalysts for solar water disinfection and using E. coli as a bacteria model. Cell envelope damage during ...

The photo-disinfection of water from two different wells (W1, pH: 4.6–5.1 ± 0.02) and (W2 pH: 5.6–5.7 ± 0.02) was carried out during the rainy season at Ouagadougou–Burkina Faso, West Africa. The weather variation during the rainy season significantly affe ...

Triggered by the Kyoto Protocol and by the aggravation of freshwater scarcity, environmental impacts should soon become key decision criteria for the planning of potable water supply projects, especially when advanced systems such as seawater desalination ...

The Laboratory of Engineering and Environmental Geology (GEOLEP) has been mandated by Swiss authorities (Swiss Federal Road Office FedRO) to test a new road runoff management concept. This concept promotes the diffuse infiltration of road runoff into infil ...

Architectural integration is a major issue in the development and spreading of solar thermal technologies. Yet the architectural quality of most existing building integrated solar thermal systems (BIST) is quite poor, which often discourages potential new ...
