Once contact with a pathogen has occurred, it might be too late for the immune system to react. Here, we asked whether anticipatory neural responses might sense potential infections and signal to the immune system, priming it for a response. We show that p ...

Because of the depth of the hippocampal-entorhinal complex (HC-EC) in the brain, understanding of its role in spatial navigation via neuromodulation was limited in humans. Here, we aimed to better elucidate this relationship in healthy volunteers, using tr ...

Robust hand motion tracking holds promise for improved human-machine interaction in diverse fields, including virtual reality, and automated sign language translation. However, current wearable hand motion tracking approaches are typically limited in detec ...

Novel usages of brain stimulation combined with artificially intelligent (AI) systems promise to address a large range of diseases. These new conjoined technologies, such as brain-computer interfaces (BCI), are increasingly used in experimental and clinica ...

Cybersickness still poses a significant challenge to the widespread usage of virtual reality, leading to different levels of dis- comfort and potentially breaking the immersive experience. Researchers have attempted to discover the possible fundamental cau ...

Embodiment has been known to have several benefits for learning. However, implementing embodied learning in a classroom with technologies such as Kinect, augmented, virtual and mixed reality and tangible objects is a challenge because of the infrastructura ...

The sense of touch is underused in today’s virtual reality systems due to lack of wearable, soft, mm-scale transducers to generate dynamic mechanical stimulus on the skin. Extremely thin actuators combining both high force and large displacement are a long ...

Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) systems have garnered recent widespread attention due to increased accessibility, functionality, and affordability. These systems sense user inputs and typically provide haptic, audio, and visual feedback to ...

Recognized as a powerful methodology for the evaluation of environmental burdens, life cycle assessment (LCA) must be performed with close-to-reality inputs to be robust and accurate. However, the necessary real-world data is hardly available at the design ...

Our brain constantly receives and integrates a flow of multisensory bodily inputs that are responsible for the way our body is represented and consciously experienced. However, in some pathological conditions, patients might experience altered perceptions ...

Developing an augmented reality (AR) system involves multiple algorithms such as image fusion, camera synchronization and calibration, and brightness control, each of them having diverse variants. This abundance of features, while beneficial in nature, is ...

While Virtual Reality applications attract the attention of developers and business analysts, the behavior of users watching 360-degree videos with Head-Mounted Display (HMD) has still to be understood. This paper introduces a dataset of the head movements ...

Objective: To investigate changes in body ownership and chronic neuropathic pain in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) using multisensory own body illusions and virtual reality (VR). Methods: Twenty patients with SCI with paraplegia and 20 healthy cont ...

In this paper we evaluate the use of non-planar projections as a means to increase the Field of View (FoV) in embodied Virtual Reality (VR). Our main goal is to bring the virtual body into the user’s FoV and to understand how this affects the virtual body/ ...

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of cognitive loading on movement kinematics and trajectory formation during goal-directed walking in a virtual reality (VR) environment. The secondary objective was to measure how participant ...

As a result of improved understanding of brain mechanisms as well as unprecedented technical advancement in neural recording methods and computer technology, it is now possible to translate large-scale brain signals into movement intentions in real time. S ...

The main goal of virtual reality based surgery simulators with haptic feedback is to provide an alternative to traditional training methods on animals, cadavers or real patients. Haptic feedback is a key feature for every surgery simulator for the training ...

Population of Virtual Worlds with Virtual Humans is increasing rapidly by people who want to create a virtual life parallel to the real one (i.e. Second Life). The evolution of technology is smoothly providing the necessary elements to increase realism wit ...

Pre-existing researches [Salamin et al. 2006] showed that Third-Person Perspective (3PP) enhances user navigation in 3D virtual environments by reducing proprio-perception issues. Nevertheless, this approach has shown drawbacks related to occlusions and ad ...

This paper presents a new library called MHaptic for bimanual haptic interaction within generic virtual environments. It has been specifically designed to work with a Haptic Workstation. MHaptic provides tools for accelerated development of virtual environ ...
