All physical processes can be described, at a fundamental level, through interactions of elementary particles. The Standard Model of particle physics (SM) describes three of the four known fundamental forces and all of the known elementary particles. The a ...

Current research on nuclear fuel focuses on two primary objectives. The first is to optimize the fuel used in the current generation of nuclear reactors in terms of safety, efficiency, and economics. This has driven efforts to increase discharge burnup and ...

Aerosols play a critical role in the Arctic's radiative balance, influencing solar radiation and cloud formation. Limited observations in the central Arctic leave gaps in understanding aerosol dynamics year-round, affecting model predictions of climate-rel ...

Shear layers and corresponding Kelvin Helmholtz-type Coherent Structures (KHCS) can be generated by rivers discharging into laterally-unconfined quiescent open water bodies (e.g., lakes). When the river discharge has a greater density than the receiving wa ...

We investigate the conditions for the local arrest of a hydraulic fracture encountering a region of larger toughness. The propagation of a hydraulic fracture strongly depends on the ratio between the energy dissipated in the creation of new fracture surfac ...

Sea salt aerosol (SSaer) significantly impacts aerosol-radiation and aerosol-cloud interactions, and sublimated blowing snow is hypothesized to be an important SSaer source in polar regions. Understanding blowing snow and other wind-sourced aerosols’ clima ...

One of the main goals of studying semileptonic decays in flavor physics is to gain a better understanding of hadronic transitions in the nonperturbative region of Quantum Chromodynamics. This involves measuring Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements, un ...

Context. The intracluster medium (ICM) is the low-density diffuse gas that fills the space between galaxies within galaxy clusters. It is primarily composed of magnetized plasma, which reaches virial temperatures of up to 10(8) K, probably due to mergers o ...

We consider fluid flows, governed by the Navier-Stokes equations, subject to a steady symmetry-breaking bifurcation and forced by a weak noise acting on a slow timescale. By generalizing the multiple-scale weakly nonlinear expansion technique employed in t ...

The difficulty of determining the slope of the famed logarithmic law in the mean velocity profile of wall-bounded turbulent flows, the inverse of the K & aacute;rm & aacute;n "constant" kappa, from direct numerical simulations (DNS) is discussed for channe ...

The near-surface boundary layer above patchy snow cover in mountainous terrain is characterized by a highly complex interplay of various flows on multiple scales. In this study, we present data from a comprehensive field campaign that cover a period of 21 ...

In this study we present the role of the Planetary Boundary Layer Height (PBLH) on the air pollutant concentrations measured at an urban background station at the megacity of Athens, Greece, an area characterized by complex topography. For this purpose, we ...

Drifting and blowing snow are important features in polar and high mountain regions. They control the surface mass balance in windy conditions and influence sublimation of snow and ice surfaces. Despite their importance, model representations in weather an ...

The atmospheric layer adjacent to the earth's surface is of crucial importance for weather models due to the exchange of energy between the surface and the atmosphere. This exchange is dependent on the various surface properties and influences the state of ...

The goal of this work is to use anisotropic adaptive finite elements for the numerical simulation of aluminium electrolysis. The anisotropic adaptive criteria are based on a posteriori error estimates derived for simplified problems. First, we consider an ...

BackgroundImpaired cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics is involved in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system and the optic nerve (ON), including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, as well as frontotemporal dementia ...

Nuclear fusion, with its potential to provide a nearly unlimited energy source, has inspired scientists to work on the development of fusion power plants. Among the various devices designed to harness nuclear fusion, the tokamak confines the fusion fuel, w ...

We studied the influence of the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) on the air masses sampled at the mountaintop Hellenic Atmospheric Aerosol and Climate Change station ((HAC) 2 ) at Mount Helmos (Greece) during the Cloud-AerosoL InteractionS in the Helmos back ...

In the standard model of particle physics, the chiral anomaly can occur in relativistic plasmas and plays a role in the early Universe, protoneutron stars, heavy-ion collisions, and quantum materials. It gives rise to a magnetic instability if the number d ...

Plasma turbulence plays a fundamental role in determining the performances of magnetic confinement fusion devices, such as tokamaks. Advances in computer science, combined with the development of efficient physical models, have significantly improved our u ...
