Silicate glasses have played a major role as structural and functional materials in human civilization since ancient Egypt. Despite their widespread use and importance in modern society, silica glasses with complex geometries are only fabricated in automat ...

In this work, various methods were used to improve the printability of a photocurable polyvinylsilazane resin filled with silicon nitride particles for digital light processing. The developed resin was used as a preceramic polymer for polymer-to-ceramic co ...

The strong clinical demand for more accurate and personalized health monitoring technologies has called for the development of additively manufactured wearable devices. While the materials palette for additive manufacturing continues to expand, the integra ...

In high energy physics, semiconductor-based sensors are widely used in particle tracking applications. These sensors are typically glued on low-mass cooling substrates, which guarantee the correct thermal management and, at the same time, minimise their in ...

Hydrogels are among the first materials expressly designed for their use in biomedicine. However, state-of-the-art applications of hydrogels are severely limited because they are typically either too soft or too brittle such that they cannot bear significa ...

Volumetric 3D printing is a novel technique that offers promising new perspectives in tissue engineering. In volumetric 3D printing, photosensitive gels or liquids are solidified by projecting light patterns via reverse tomography. Recent results show that ...

Volumetric additive manufacturing is a novel fabrication method allowing rapid, freeform, layer-less 3D printing. Analogous to computer tomography (CT), the method projects dynamic light patterns into a rotating vat of photosensitive resin. These light pat ...

Application of a single metal or alloy is often restricted by its properties from optimal combination of performance and cost. Therefore, there is a vast need of joining dissimilar metals for various applications in biomedical, aerospace, automobile and ma ...

Metal hydrides are an interesting group of chemical compounds, able to store hydrogen in a reversible, compact and safe manner. Among them, A(2)B(7)-type intermetallic alloys based on La-Mg-Ni have attracted particular attention due to their high electroch ...

The digitization of timber construction, the emergence of engineered wood products, and the urgent need to drastically reduce buildings' environmental impact have given a rebirth to wood as a construction material. On the one hand, increasing the use of ti ...

Permeability of fibrous microstructures is a key material property for predicting the mold fill times and resin flow path during composite manufacturing. In this work, we report an efficient approach to predict the permeability of 3D microstructures from d ...

Examples for applications of nitrous oxide in organic synthesis remain rare up until today. First mayor contributions of our group were published in 2012, when nitrous oxide was successfully captured by N-heterocyclic carbenes. Subsequent studies investiga ...

Ceramics are highly technical materials with properties of interest for multiple industries. Precisely because of their high chemical, thermal, and mechanical resistance, ceramics are difficult to mold into complex shapes. A possibility to make convoluted ...

Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) exhibit excellent properties and are compatible with many shaping techniques due to the liquid character of the preceramic polymers (PCPs). Furthermore, their properties are adjustable by modifying the precursor composition ...

3D printing is a powerful manufacturing technology for shaping materials into complex structures. While the palette of printable materials continues to expand, the rheological and chemical requisites for printing are not always easy to fulfill. Here, a uni ...

Elastomer composites are prepared by infiltrating polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) into a porous ceramic structure of nanoparticles. This method differs from the conventional approach, where particles are dispersed into the polymer matrix, since here, the polym ...

Additive manufacturing is a growing sector of industrial production that allows the fabrication of parts with complex geometries and reduced waste. The context of this thesis is light-based additive manufacturing technologies. In the first part of the the ...

In this thesis, we advocate that Computer-Aided Engineering could benefit from a Geometric Deep Learning revolution, similarly to the way that Deep Learning revolutionized Computer Vision. To do so, we consider a variety of Computer-Aided Engineering pr ...

Nowadays manufacturing environment is highly volatile and rapidly changing as the need of products is increasing exponentially, due to the fact that Product Life Cycle is shortened and therefore more products are required to be manufactured or remanufactur ...

This paper presents an integrated design tool for structures composed of engineered timber panels that are connected by traditional wood joints. Recent advances in computational architecture have permitted to automate the fabrication and assembly of such s ...
