We consider the numerical approximation of an optimal control problem for an elliptic Partial Differential Equation (PDE) with random coefficients. Specifically, the control function is a deterministic, distributed forcing term that minimizes the expected ...

We discuss the multiscale modeling of a granular material trapped between continuum elastic domains. The amorphous granular region, usually termed “gouge,” is under high confinement pressure, to represent the loading of faults at depth. We model the granul ...

We introduce a new numerical method for the time-dependent Maxwell equations on unstructured meshes in two space dimensions. This relies on the introduction of a new mesh, which is the barycentric-dual cellular complex of the starting simplicial mesh, and ...

Enabling analysis of non-linear systems in linear form, the Koopman operator has been shown to be a powerful tool for system identification and controller design. However, current data-driven methods cannot provide quantification of model uncertainty given ...

Metal plasticity is an inherently multiscale phenomenon due to the complex long-range field of atomistic dislocations that are the primary mechanism for plastic deformation in metals. Atomistic/Continuum (A/C) coupling methods are computationally efficient ...

Semi-discrete optimal transport problems, which evaluate the Wasserstein distance between a discrete and a generic (possibly non-discrete) probability measure, are believed to be computationally hard. Even though such problems are ubiquitous in statistics, ...

We propose a novel sparse dictionary learning method for planar shapes in the sense of Kendall, namely configurations of landmarks in the plane considered up to similitudes. Our shape dictionary method provides a good trade-off between algorithmic simplici ...

We introduce and analyze a discontinuous Galerkin method for the numerical modeling of the equations of Multiple-Network Poroelastic Theory (MPET) in the dynamic formulation. The MPET model can comprehensively describe functional changes in the brain consi ...

An integer program (IP) is a problem of the form

\min \{f(x) : \, Ax = b, \ l \leq x \leq u, \ x \in \Z^n\}

, where

A \in \Z^{m \times n}

b \in \Z^m

l,u \in \Z^n

, and

f: \Z^n \rightarrow \Z

is a separable convex objective function. The problem o ...

We introduce a two-level preconditioner for the efficient solution of large scale saddle point linear systems arising from the finite element (FE) discretization of parametrized Stokes equations. This preconditioner extends the Multi Space Reduced Basis (M ...

Computational chemistry aims to simulate reactions and molecular properties at the atomic scale, advancing the design of novel compounds and materials with economic, environmental, and societal implications. However, the field relies on approximate quantum ...

In this article, we establish novel decompositions of Gaussian fields taking values in suitable spaces of generalized functions, and then use these decompositions to prove results about Gaussian multiplicative chaos. We prove two decomposition theorems. Th ...

Reduced-order models are indispensable for multi-query or real-time problems. However, there are still many challenges to constructing efficient ROMs for time-dependent parametrized problems. Using a linear reduced space is inefficient for time-dependent n ...

This manuscript discusses discretization of the Vlasov-Poisson system in 2D+2V phase space using high-order accurate conservative finite difference algorithms. One challenge confronting direct kinetic simulation is the significant computational cost associ ...

The multiquery solution of parametric partial differential equations (PDEs), that is, PDEs depending on a vector of parameters, is computationally challenging and appears in several engineering contexts, such as PDE-constrained optimization, uncertainty qu ...

In the field of sustainability, scholars, and policy-makers herald the transformative power of participation in knowledge production. However, a discrepancy between these expectations and the limited understanding of the complex interactions constituting p ...

In the recent years, considerable attention has been paid to preserving structures and invariants in reduced basis methods, in order to enhance the stability and robustness of the reduced system. In the context of Hamiltonian systems, symplectic model redu ...

This paper presents a novel class of preconditioners for the iterative solution of the sequence of symmetric positive-definite linear systems arising from the numerical discretization of transient parabolic and selfadjoint partial differential equations. T ...

We analyze the numerical performance of a preconditioning technique recently proposed in [1] for the efficient solution of parametrized linear systems arising from the finite element (FE) discretization of parameter-dependent elliptic partial differential ...

The paper introduces a novel, hierarchical preconditioner based on nested dissection and hierarchical matrix compression. The preconditioner is intended for continuous and discontinuous Galerkin formulations of elliptic problems. We exploit the property th ...
