The origin of micrometeorites (MMs) from asteroids and comets is well-established, but the relative contribution from these two classes remains poorly resolved. Likewise, determining the precise origin of individual MMs is an open challenge. Here, cosmic-r ...

Context. We report the exploitation of a sample of Solar System observations based on data from the third Gaia Data Release (Gaia DR3) of nearly 157 000 asteroids. It extends the epoch astrometric solution over the time coverage planned for the Gaia DR4, w ...

The binding and catalytic functions of proteins are generally mediated by a small number of functional residues held in place by the overall protein structure. Here, we describe deep learning approaches for scaffolding such functional sites without needing ...

Understanding how proteins fold into their native structure is a fundamental problem in biophysics, crucial for protein design. It has been hypothesized that the formation of a molten globule intermediate precedes folding to the native conformation of glob ...

Direct-coupling analysis (DCA) for studying the coevolution of residues in proteins has been widely used to predict the three-dimensional structure of a protein from its sequence. We present RADI/raDIMod, a variation of the original DCA algorithm that grou ...

Machine learning (ML) is emerging as a powerful approach that has recently shown potential to affect various frontiers of carbon capture, a key interim technology to assist in the mitigation of climate change. In this perspective, we reveal how ML implemen ...

Urease converts urea into ammonia and carbon dioxide and makes urea available as a nitrogen source for all forms of life except animals. In human bacterial pathogens, ureases also aid in the invasion of acidic environments such as the stomach by raising th ...

Barium (Ba) dwarfs and CH subgiants are the less evolved analogues of Ba and CH giants. They are F- to G-type main-sequence stars polluted with heavy elements by their binary companions when the companion was on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). This comp ...

Rationalizing the structure and structure–property relations for complex materials such as polymers or biomolecules relies heavily on the identification of local atomic motifs, e.g., hydrogen bonds and secondary structure patterns, that are seen as buildin ...

Portland cement has been in use by human civilization for over a century. Yet, we do not fully understand its hydration reaction mechanisms due to the complexity of the system and its continued reaction over time making it hard to study it experimentally. ...

Engineered plasmonic nanostructures have emerged as powerful sensing platforms and are promoting novel applications in various fields. By providing extreme field confinement down to molecular dimensions and enhancing light-matter interaction at the nanosca ...

The robust computational design of functional proteins has the potential to deeply impact translational research and broaden our understanding of the determinants of protein function and stability. The low success rates of computational design protocols an ...

Origami manufacturing has led to considerable advances in the field of foldable structures with innovative applications in robotics, aerospace, and metamaterials. However, existing origami are either load-bearing structures that are prone to tear and fail ...

In this research study we describe our last effort in further improving the achievable Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) based navigation performance in an Earth-Moon Transfer Orbit (MTO). The GNSS-based orbital filter we implemented previously wit ...

Since the dawn of the Space Age, over six thousand satellites have been launched into Earth orbit. The function of determining the orientation of a satellite in orbit, so that it can point its antennas and instruments in the required direction is known as ...

ORIGIN is a proposal for the M3 mission call of ESA aimed at the study of metal creation from the epoch of cosmic dawn. Using high-spectral resolution in the soft X-ray band, ORIGIN will be able to identify the physical conditions of all abundant elements ...

Huntington's disease (HD), caused by a mutation of the corresponding gene encoding the protein huntingtin (htt), is characterized by progressive deterioration of cognitive and motor functions, paralleled by extensive loss of striatal neurons. At the cellul ...

We present a study of the dynamics of protein aggregation using a common path heterodyne Bloch surface wave label-free sensing scheme. We demonstrate the ability to detect, during thermal incubation, the first early dynamics events of protein aggregation a ...

We report the detection of a double planetary system around HD 140718 as well as the discovery of two long period and massive planets orbiting HD 171238 and HD 204313. Those discoveries were made with the CORALIE Echelle spectrograph mounted on the 1.2-m E ...

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have increasingly contributed to the understanding of biomolecular processes, allowing for predictions of thermodynamic and structural properties. Unfortunately, the holy grail of protein structure prediction was soon fo ...
