The stiffness of cells and of their nuclei is a biomarker of several pathological conditions. Current measurement methods rely on invasive physical probes that yield one or two stiffness values for the whole cell. However, the internal distribution of cell ...

Titanium-based Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) offer remarkable mechanical, thermal, and corrosion resistance properties and are of high interest to several industrial sectors, including aerospace. One of the main commercial drawbacks of these materials, wh ...

Elastic gridshells are a class of planar-to-3D linkages typically composed of straight flexible beams connected via rigid rotational joints. The integration of planar curved flexible beams into these linkages significantly broadens their design space, allo ...

In this study, TC-PRISMA was employed to simulate the precipitation (number density and radius) of an FeMnSi-based shape memory alloy (FeMnSi-SMA), with a chemical composition of Fe-17Mn-5Si-10Cr-4Ni-1(V, C) (wt%), during one-step and two-step aging proces ...

Model-free data-driven computational mechanics (DDCM) is a new paradigm for simulations in solid mechanics. The modeling step associated to the definition of a material constitutive law is circumvented through the introduction of an abstract phase space in ...

The steel-ultrahigh performance concrete (UHPC) lightweight composite deck (LWCD) is increasingly adopted by in-service steel bridges to address the fatigue cracking issue for orthotropic steel decks (OSDs) and the premature damage issue for asphalt overla ...

Tunable metasurfaces can shift their resonant frequency through different approaches, one of which is applying mechanical deformations. Here, we show the effects of two key factors on the tunability of deformable metasurfaces; the resonator geometry and su ...

As acknowledged explicitly or implicitly in most of current design codes, a high level of sustained loading has a detrimental effect on the concrete compressive strength. However, its beneficial effect in terms of deformation capacity is neglected in most ...

The load-carrying capacity of many reinforced concrete structures is governed by shear failures, occurring before reaching the flexural capacity of the member. For redundant systems, such as slabs subjected to concentrated loads, local shear failures (typi ...

Ultra High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Composite (UHPFRC) is increasingly popular for new structural designs thanks to its high resistance both in tension and compression. When UHPFRC is complemented with steel reinforcing bars or prestressin ...

Dynamic recrystallization helps to refine grain structures in metals and tune their properties. Confining recrystallization within prior nanoscale twinning provides a path for reaching exceptional grain refinement. ...

WC-Co cemented carbides are composites, which combine a hard phase consisting of WC grains and a metallic ductile phase as a binder. Their excellent mechanical properties, combining high hardness, toughness and refractory properties, make them excellent ma ...

The prediction of the critical buckling conditions of shell structures is plagued by imperfection sensitivity. Non-destructive testing through point-load probing has been recently proposed to map the stability landscape of cylindrical shells. However, the ...

Triaxial testing of argillaceous rocks and shales is significantly more challenging than conventional rock mechanical testing. The challenges are mainly related to the very low permeability of these geomaterials, and their sensitivity to exposure of atmosp ...

Biofilms are surface-attached and matrix-enclosed microbial communities that dominate microbial life in numerous ecosystems. Using flumes and automated optical coherence tomography, we studied the morphogenesis of phototrophic biofilms along a gradient of ...

This paper addresses the uniaxial tensile response of Strain Hardening Ultra High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Concretes (SH-UHPFRC) subjected to very low strain rates and low temperatures. The influence of four different strain rates; 1 × 10−5, 1 × 10−7, ...

The ever-increasing demand for rehabilitation of existing structures and construction of new ones, along with environmental issues of the construction sites represent a heavy burden for society in terms of economy and environment. Meanwhile, Ultra-High Per ...

A modification to the empirical Olson-Cohen strain-induced austenite to martensite transformation kinetic model is proposed. The proposed kinetic model accounts for the stress state at the grain level and the crystallography of the transformation mechanism ...

Precise and robust predictions of autogenous shrinkage of high performance concrete are essential to limit self-induced stresses and cracking in modern concrete structures. This paper presents predictions of autogenous shrinkage for three cement pastes of ...

Architectural heritage preservation and sustainability need advanced graphic techniques in order to document and understand the disposition/composition of plaster muqarnas, a fragile construction element. The muqarnas are key elements in the Nasrid archite ...
